    Nah.
They use a cordless Sawzall or a cordless peanut grinder with a cut-off blade.
A skid plate might slow them down, and make them spend more time.
The only way to combat it on a large scale is to stop the resale at the buyer level.

One of the things they did up here was to implement a program where the seller gets his check mailed to him. He has to provide a mailing address and wait about 3 or more days for his check.
Tweakers need cash now, don't want to wait and don't want to give up a mailing address.

It was a scourge here for a while, until they implemented the new scrap metal resale laws.

Welding the nuts only adds another step to cut them off to be able to bolt in the new pipe after the fact.

    1. They slash and burn their way through your PIPE. They don't care about dealing with bolts, welded or not.

    2. They are selling these for SCRAP in most cases. Cat-cons contain precious metals that recyclers want and supposedly the Toyota cat-cons have a higher content of these metals.
This low-hanging fruit contains platinum, palladium and rhodium.

I had a cat protection plate fabbed up with a few unconventional mounting ideas incorporated. Also, metal was welded in place to block access to the bolts and any way of pulling the cats out if they were to get past the plate with a saw. Thick rebar was welded to the top of the plate to slow down any saw attempt.

They should hammer the recyclers that buy these obviously stolen cats. If they werent buying 10 at a time from some crack head with no questions asked, the theft would go way down.

Damn, I was hoping they would skip Santa Cruz. I guess Budbuilts are looking mighty good now. Knowing my luck I'd probably be next.

Yea, it's a pretty big deal here, ive had people randomly come up to me and tell me about the cat thefts when they see my Tacoma. Sounds like a lot around the flats area, go figure. I would love to roll one of those dudes while they where stuck under my truck.

Please, can you reread my post that you quoted?

I said welding the nuts only adds another step for YOU to deal with AFTER THEY HAVE STOLEN YOUR SHIT before you can bolt in the new midpipe to replace the stolen one. I know they are cutting them out and I know why they are taking them and I know they get pennies on the dollar at the scrap yard compared to what it costs to replace and I know a thick ass expensive skid plate welded on is the only way to be sure to protect the cats when not in my locked garage.

Yea the Asshats are over here. I know a Santa Cruz PD officer who's cat was cut from his 4runner. Every morning when I start my truck, I sigh with relief when it's not loud.

They are hitting the park and ride parking lots here. They did four cars hopped on the train and were off, before anyone knew what they were doing.

The powers that be in your area need to set policies in place that dry up the thieves' access to quick cash from the recyclers.
It's the only way to slow down cat theft other than fortifying your own situation.
