If you're think of this one it started out with a stuck ebrake that ended up bending the shoes and causing them to bind. http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2n...tacoma-locked-up-skid-stop-3.html#post4181591

Well I replaced the calipers last night which I must say is the easiest caliper job out of any car I have ever done. Those brake pads are uber easy to switch between calipers!

I took the truck for a test drive last night and all seemed well; this morning there was a bit of a bump to get it moving but not as bad as before so that may have been the issue. The real test is going to come in about 45 minutes when I leave work after the truck has been sitting since 7am. If it still sticks then I guess I am moving to the back brakes and giving a nice "come to jesus" talk with Toyota since they inspected the rear brakes twice now and said they were fine.

I am sure the front calipers were bad though; they were rusted to shit and at least two seals on each one were shot so I am glad I changed out the fronts.

Changing out the calipers also lead me to find that my drivers side spring is broke at the top which is probably the rattle I have been hearing occassionally so I guess daddy gets some coilovers sooner than he thought!

If it's still a problem check out the pics on that thread (never mind I'll put them here) and look where Max's shoes bent. One we tracked the problem to the left rear & popped the drum off the cause was quite obvious.
The bent areas were on the bottom when mounted.

Nice to see people actually step up and help. We could use fewer smartasses around here.

Keep us posted. Atleast you know about the spring now and the calipers are good to go!

Hey, new member here! Did replacing the calipers fix it? If not, have you been driving through any water lately? The reason I ask, is a buddy had a very similar problem in his '93 pickup: It was ice in the rear diff!

Had a Toyota tech tell me he had seen a couple of Tacomas with a problem like this and he said it was a binding u-joint problem.

Could you explain a little further? I am assuming since you said u-joint and not CV that its a drive shaft issue. I inspected and greased the drive shaft ujoints about 8 months ago and they seemed fine so I might have to reinspect those. Is there a way to check for bind?

To answer another question; no I have not been driving through water. This is pretty much a daily driver that; like I said previously; occassionally sees a two track for backpacking trips or U.P. snowboarding.

All of this being said; the calipers did not fix the problem. As I said before I am glad I changed them they were definitely in poor shape and replacing them was a good preventative maintenance item either way. So I guess its back to the drawing board. If I have time on Monday since I have the day off I will take a look at the rears.

The only positive so far is I talked to my wife last night and thanks to members here I am getting a set of OME 880's and some 5100's! So thats a plus!

It's nice to have both, but a time and place for everything.
Help when needed. (I'm glad to help when I can)
Smartasses for entertainment. (makes for good reading threads and I've been known to do it but not when someone needs help)
Dave congrats on the soon to be new lift.

So after this morning I think I may have narrowed it down to the rear brakes but leaving work today will be the final Go/NoGo test on that. I parked it Sunday night without the ebrake on; just left it in gear. This morning it pulled away no problem; but I was backing up not going forward. It was very cold this morning (about 6) so that didnt affect it. Today when I leave work I will be pulling forward first which is different and I did not use the ebrake.

If it pulls away fine then it pretty much has to be the rear brakes. So I will then replace all of that nonsense and hopefully this will all be taken care of. Then I get to move on to the fun stuff of OME/Billy combo and new sway bar end links!

    11am edit:

So I just went out to make a parts run for work and the truck was already stuck. So thats 4.5hrs of setting and stuck with no ebrake cable applied. This morning I went backward first then forward and there was no sticking. To test this theory I parked in my spot ass end out so I will back up when I leave work and then pull forward to see if it sticks. If it does NOT stick when pulling backward and then pulling forward but DOES when pulling forward first.........Where does that leave me?

Lets put the thinking caps on here guys.

Well I booked an appointment at Belle Tire near my house for this afternoon to do rear shoes and hardware. I would do it myself but a newborn daughter and hectic work schedule doesn't give me a lot of time in the garage (much to my dismay). So I figure for under $200 I'll let someone else worry about it.

On that note I will let you know how my morning go's tomorrow. They are predicting another single digit night here in MI so it should be a good test of the repairs on whether or not this thing gets fixed.

It sucks every dollar I spend finding this problem is one dollar away from me upgrading the suspension! Urghhhh.

And I do, when I have time. I did the calipers and all other maintenance in the last couple years except when I just simply couldn't like the two times its been to the dealer and tonight. I could do it at home in the time it will take Belle Tire BUT; if I am home then my wife has access to me to hand off my daughter since I have been at work all day and she is still on leave.

    :D

So....Good news. I actually didn't have to replace the drum components at all (at least not yet). They took it all apart and came out to tell me that everything looked great. I asked them if I could take a look and sure enough the internals and drum looked really good; almost new (70% shoe left at least) a couple springs were still colored and not covered in dust.

That being said they were really tight and the drum was hard to remove so they adjusted the shoes to reduce the grab but they are still locking up slightly when I stop hard and fast. So may proportioning valve?

I left the parking brake on all night and it dipped down to about 10*F so plenty cold and I took off going forward this morning without a single issue. Maybe they were simply adjusted to tight.

I will give it some time and see what happens and report back. Thank you all for your help and let me know what you think on that proportiong valve.

Best of all the whole thing was FREE!! Big up to Belle Tire.
