Want to know why wolves are bad? Talk to a rancher in wolf areas. My brother in law works for a ranch in Dillon, MT. He has watched them kill animals just to leave them lay. They kill for fun. They are decimating elk herds up there. But they've figured out that domesticated animals are easier pickings. They kill sheep, cattle and horses. He has told me on more than one occasion they'll be moving cows and one wolf will start to "play" with one of their dogs. They lure them into the trees, where the rest of the pack is waiting. They kill the dog and move on. Also they reproduce at insane rates because they dont have predators. In very small manageable numbers, they are ok. But they are so sneaky and smart that keeping track of real wolf numbers is very close to impossible. If anyone ever gets the chance to talk to someone who lives and works with these dogs everyday, take some time to talk to them, I can guarantee you will change your mind. People are under the impression these are big coyotes and they only kill the weak to survive. Thats not true, they are much more than that.

Wolves are native to these regions, it's not the wolves fault that humans built upon their land.

I will weigh in here but will try to keep my comment brief, as I am strongly against them, though I do kind of see why they thought it would be a good idea to reintroduce them... They are definitely a problem up here. There have been multiple occurrences of wolves ravaging packs of farm animals and leaving most of them. The wolves that were reintroduced ARE NOT the same wolves that were eradicated from the area years ago. The current ones are a Canadian strain that are much larger than the ones that were removed. They are better equipped than the ones that were here before, and it shows. They have gotten very good at clearing full sections of land of pretty much all large game... the big problem here is that these wolves that we currently have are too good if hunters and the wildlife can't keep up. Just as an example... a range that I used to hunt when I was younger at one point had about 2700 elk living on it in 2006. I have a picture taken Spring 2007 showing a pack of 10+ wolves in the area... the count on the elk population as of this year is about 150.

I also have a friend that lives in Twin Bridges, MT that has had his sheep populations nearly wiped out on 3 different occasions. Its really sad to watch what they have done in many areas of just this state, let alone Wyoming and Yellowstone Natl Park... Sure they're nice to look at sometimes, but it seems to be that the people who like them the most are the ones who don't have to deal with them.

So , are you suggesting that in 4 years , the 10 wolves killed 250 elk each or 60+ each per year ?

Some of us (few) still have some common sense here in Cali. We will do what we have to if the wolves present a threat.

yeah. if you catch the wolves attacking your livestock your allowed to shoot them. or try to attack humans. but we still are not allowed to hunt them

That's 2500 elk in 4 years , that is the disparity in the elk count that was posted .

Wolves hunt as a pack , and feed as a pack , that is a lot of elk to be attributed to 10 wolves

It's amazing how the ancient fear of the wolf and the serpent still lives in the minds of people today.
I fish in Rattlesnake country and it's sometimes hilarious to see people react to snakes.
    I'm convinced it's hereditary.
