Just as we have mis-managed the forests leaving them vulnerable to devastating fires, we have screwed up the balance in the rest of the ecosystem as well. Long before we got here, deer, elk and every other damn critter lived in healthy populations with wolves. The land will only support so many predators in any given area, that there are domestic animals within that area is not the fault of the wolves, it's the fault of the people who eradicated them in the first place and then brought in domestic animals while the deer and elk populations skyrocketed, thereby throwing the ecosystem out of balance, wolves are needed to keep these populations in check.
It's a tough call for the ranchers but guess what, we are slowly coming to the collective realization that the old way of doing things has repercussions that we did not understand. Like damming rivers and silting spawning beds which crash salmon populations, or introducing invasive species into an ecosystem which has no way to keep that species in check, I'm sure there is going to be a period of (sometimes rough), readjustment when reintroducing a predator such as a wolf back into an ecosystem. As to the earlier post who stated that a pack killed off nearly a whole elk population, did he ever think that maybe that region was never supposed to have such a huge population in the first place? That maybe having wolves thinned the herd back to what the ecosystem could realistically support? Use your brains folks, the animals have been in balance this way for tens of thousands of years with NO problems, it's only when WE started screwing with things playing fucking God, did we get our selves into trouble.

    I didn't say you were.

You can see however, in the way some people speak (or write) that they are afraid.
There are these two strong human elements at work, fear and wanting to brave (protect), whenever wolves are the topic.

Here, let me run this by all of you, any given area can only support so many deer, elk and wolves, take away the top predator and the other populations soar, then throw domestic animals into the mix ok? Now, reintroduce that top predator back into the mix and guess what? The wolf population soars because there is so much food to be had, and the density of that predator increases as well, simple biology, now, as that predator works it's way through that elk population, the elk count goes down but it still has to support an abnormally high population of wolves and the wolves then do what wolves do, they move on to whatever else can be had-domestic animals, hence the hurt is put on the ranchers, it's all our fault this happened. Nature takes a while to come back into balance, my suggestion is to trap and relocate many of the wolves until the density reflects the area's ability to feed them without needing to hunt the domestic animals, yes wolves are very smart, we are the stupid ones.

I guess so :notsure:. These numbers are from the FWP, not my numbers. The FWP doesn't even put a game check station in this area anymore, as very few hunters harvest an animal up there each year. Here is a pic of that same area in January of 2010 that a guy I hunt with took. [IMG]
I count 22 wolves there. I am sure there are more than that here as well though. A single wolf will consume approximately 1.5 ton of meat every year. With the really long winters we have been having and an overabundance of wolves here, I suppose I could see where they could take out a large chunk of large game populations. I don't mind wolves being here in general, but they need to be regulated like every other species here. The elk are also not as well equipped as the larger Canadian wolves that were reintroduced here. The elk up North (Manitoban and Roosevelt elk) are larger bodied than the Rocky Mountain subspecies of elk. There is just a lot of variables at play here, many of which are out of our control. I am not going to try and start a war here though, as I know that those who feel most strongly about a subject on one side or another tend to chime in the most. I am just pointing out the effects that I feel here in an area that has become inundated with wolves...

Too bad they don't eat everything that they kill... They are known to kill a large group of animals at once and not be able to eat all of it.

Id take a pack of wolves as a neibhor than the apartment complex thats there any day of the week...wolves ftw. Anyone who thinks a human is better than a wolf or any other animal for that matter is just silly.

Naw, you're not starting a war, I am enjoying the discussion, I know I am passionate about these things, but believe me, i'm not some hippie, vegan Californian, I LOVE MEAT! I like a steak that tastes like it died screamin'. I'm all for commerce too, if done in a responsible manner, i don't believe that driving species to extinction is good in the long run. Restoring natural balances is tricky business, it's never been done on large scales until recently, we don't really know what we're doing because it's never been done before. In reading your post, and by my definition, then the Canadian Wolf is technically an invasive species! You say the Canadian wolves are bigger and tougher (guess you need to be to fuck with a moose!), and the American elk are smaller? It makes a lot of sense to me. But how do you regulate them while still working towards a balance? The US government will keep the population protected until there are so many that you have to hunt them to slow them down. I do believe that nature will eventually restore it's natural balance, it will take years and a lot of growing pains. While I agree that the wolf should be reintroduced into the wilds, i am assuming that the smaller American version is long since extinct and the Canadian wolf is the next best alternative, only time will tell whether or not this was the right thing to do. There's an old saying that goes: "The road to Hell is paved with good intentions".

Why are wolves a problem? Ever consider that maybe the humans whom have moved into their territory are the problem?

hahaha yeah. we had a case a few months back where a lady in a remote region of az, in the forest was attacked by a bear while walkn her dog, so all the good ol boys rounded up their shotguns and "Cleared" the area for safeties sake. Now i feel for the dumb bitch and all, would hate that to happen to a loved one. but in all seriousness why is she or anyone else surprised? Dog is tamed, and dumb and barked at bear im sure, she probably didnt play dead, why? cause she felt safe cause she thought it was her home. BS its the bears territory.

Im ok with hunting, if all edible meat, is, well, eaten.

First of all the wolves are not being reintroduced to California. They had captured and radio tagged ONE wolf and after a while it had made it's way into California. The reason it is illegal to hunt wolves is because we've hunted them to the brink of extinction. If you think this is a good thing try asking farmers about the MASSIVE wild boar problem they're having all over California. Wolves, a domestic species happens to be one of the very few predators of these hogs, a non-domestic species.

As for wolves hunting for sport this is a misconception. Imagine that in order for you to eat you must work with a group of 5-10 people. During these hunts you can literally exhaust every ounce of energy you have, and even then you may not catch your prey. Now imagine your group has come upon a large herd of easily killed animals, enough to feed your group for days. Would you risk your survival by only killing what you need?

Here are some sites to help inform you with more reliable information from people who have studied wolves rather than the occasional uneducated on the subject hearsay.
