JVC KW-XR610 Double DIN

I'm looking to upgrade my factory HU in my 2006 Double Cab. I'm not looking for anything fancy, just a double DIN that can play CD/MP3's, has an Aux jack and USB.

Crutchfield has the JVC KW-XR610 for $170 and it includes the dash kit.

I’m looking for any feedback from 2nd Gen Taco owners who have this head unit. Also some advice on a wiring harness (part number/source) as it doesn't come with one.

I was looking at this unit also. I don't need nav or bluetooth, but would like to continue with XM and I think it has the add-on capability. I like that you can adjust the lighting to match the rest of the truck (mine's orange). I'm curoius to what others think.

 

I have this in my 1st gen. i like it a lot, its a nice one. you dont really need the wiring harness but if makes life a lot easier

 

I was looking at this one just this morning. If you look at the installation gear more closely it DOES come with the wiring harness You dont need a dash kit since it is a double DIN going in a double DIN slot. Just trying to help so you dont waste 20 bucks.

You DO need a faceplate at least for the dash. The factory face isn't going to work. Crutchfield will send you a free wiring harness and a free surround kit (silver or black, your choice). You might not need the internal mounting bracket, but if you do, Cruthfield will provide that as well.

As far as that line of JVC stereos go, I was looking hard at one. I didn't buy one because I wanted rear USB input, and when I played around with one at Best Buy it just felt cheap. Plus I don't love the brand, though they are apparently better than they were 10 years ago (so lots of folks say).

 

I have a JVC KW-XR810, same exact face as the JVC KW-XR610. For $20 more you get bluetooth capability, and a rear USB cable. I ran mine into the glove compartment. You'll need a faceplate and wiring harness for either system. Below is a link to Sonic, they'll include both the faceplate and harness.Hope this helps

So…after a few days of research I think I may have changed my mind. Although the all the JVC units get good reviews as far as performance, I still see reviews that say the unit’s look and feel cheap. What’s funny is that I installed a single DIN JVC HU in my 1990 Nissan truck years ago and it’s still going strong. My son now owns that truck…and still no problems.

But, since I’m talking about my Tacoma, I’m now looking at the Clarion CX501 (below). It has everything I need and nothing I don’t (except for Bluetooth which I probably won’t use). What I really like about the unit (which goes the same for the JVC units) is that I can adjust and (hopefully) match the stock dash lighting. Reviews for the Clarion HU are great at every website I went to.





As I understand it, I will also need the PAC TATO adapter (below) to integrate the HU to my factory JBL system. I want to make the installation process as simple as possible, without cutting into the factory wiring. I have no problem building and soldering a harness outside the truck, as long as when I’m done everything is “Plug and Play”.





With that…I’m looking for any feedback, advice or comments anyone has to offer on the Clarion CX501, the PAC TATO adapter or HU upgrades & installation in general.

You sound just like me, man. I went back and forth on a HU for around $250. I had the Clarion in my shopping cart about 5 times, but I couldn't get past the lack of rear USB.

I ended up getting a Kenwood single DIN with video for like $269 on sale.

I can't tell you how nice it is to have my Ipod in the glove box. I was really worried about the look of a single DIN but it's really not bad. The Kenwood brand has a better rep than Clarion, if that matters to you, and the screen is really nice. It's a lot better than having an LCD readout.

Not saying my choice is right for you, but you might consider at least looking at single DINs - there are a lot more options out there than with double-dins.

Also, Pioneer makes a line of double din touch screens that are popular here and cost around $300. Might consider those.

Who is the manufacturer of your dash kit (faceplate)? I'm looking to match the dark grey also.

 

I dunno -schoshe or metra. I selected the "black" option when I ordered from Crutchfield. No complaints with color or fit. It's got a nice texture to it.

Thanks for the advice and pics. I wouldn’t have this problem if Toyota was on the ball a few years ago. MP3 and Aux jacks should be standard stuff…even way back in 2006!

The Single DIN does look nice and there sure are a lot more choices. But I think I will stick with the Double DIN and go with the Clarion. I’m not an iPod user so I have nothing to hide, but the option of loading a USB with my favorite tunes and just inserting that in the HU is very appealing.

 

No prob. If you're not hooking up an Ipod then I would jump on the Clarion. It came out this spring or summer I believe, and it's obviously very popular. Crutchfield has a ton of reviews on it. If you get it, let us know how you like it!
