Quick question about windows 7 install

Hello all,

I am going to be building a new computer in the next few weeks. I have a Windows 7 x64bit upgrade CD. I was able to use it to re-install a clean copy of 7 on my new SSD but it won't accept the product key so I am running it off the CD for now. I am assuming this is due the clean install not being an upgrade. I thought an upgrade CD wouldn't give me the option of a clean install without an old OS installed. Anyway, the new computer will be a similar situation and I don't want to buy another copy of Windows 7; especially since 8 is around the corner.

I do have a copy of Windows XP pro 32 bit.

Can I install the XP and then upgrade it back to Windows 7?

 

That is what I would do.

 

You can't upgrade a 32 bit OS to a 64 bit OS. Has that copy been installed before? If you changed any hardware that is why it won't take. The product key binds itself with your hardware.

 

Always AVOID these upgrade versions.

You might be able to call Microsoft, plead ignorance and get an activation key.

 

Not always, just pay attention to small details. I'm NOT running a Windows 7 upgrade as a full install.

And while everyone says sometimes MS gives out activation codes if you cry about it, in the last 10 years I've been working on computers I haven't received one in at least 6 years.

OEM is essentially Full without the retail box.

Even the basic concept of "Upgrade Version" is flawed. Don't buy it.

OP, there has been a couple of times where I had to call Microsoft during installs for various reasons.
They will typically ask you a few questions (anti-piracy stuff) and if they're convinced you're legit, they will give you an Activation Key over the phone, which is different than you Product Key.

Students can get discounted copies of upgrade versions for around $60. I have one. Clean install and running for 2 years. It's not flawed, the software piracy laws are flawed.

I would buy an OEM version. It's generally not marketed to the public as it is intended for system builders and administrators.
It is a Full version without the retail box at bulk pricing.

Dood, if your admin is peddling upgrade versions, then he/she is a n00b.
The M$ planet runs on OEM whether it's gang-installed over a network or individually installed.
Upgrade and OEM pricing is similar with OEM usually cheaper.

I bought the Upgrade for 79 bux and IIRC I did used a generic Vista key or something to that extent. I did a clean install as well. Its not hard, but its not legal without a Vista key.

First off, were talking about personal computers, not company ones. Second, regardless of whether it says upgrade, oem, or retail they are all still full versions.

An upgrade simply provides you with the option to install inside a Windows environment without erasing your data.

And as I stated above students can get the upgrade version cheaper than an oem.

Thanks guys I appreciate it. I am a little rusty. It's difficult to tend to all of my interests at once and be 100% or even 50% competent in them. Nursing and EMT have total priority right now so my computer knowledge is having to be brushed up. I appreciate the help.
