I just bought a new Tacoma the other week. I meant to buy a regular cab 4 cyl with the intention of modifying it right away. I upsold myself on an extended cab v6 with the convenience package. So any upgrades I do will have to wait a while. The first thing I plan on doing is getting bigger tires and some nicer rims. I can't decide to go with black or chrome. Before I started lurking around on here chrome was the only thing I was considering. Now I am starting to question that thought.

One question I have heard a lot of people ask is whether the tire sensor is compatible with aftermarket wheels. Does my truck have this sensor and how do I know what wheels are compatible?

    Welcome from AZ!

Do you have the TPMS reset button? That is one way to tell if you have the system or not.

Where do I find the TPMS reset button. I have the convenience package, but I don't know if it comes with that or not.

Under the steering wheel, on the dash plate. I have yet to see a second gen without the system, but there could be some...

Hey that truck looks familiar (until you open the hood or look at the nose) right down to the convenience package.
    Yes you have the TPMS.

I think silver trucks are by far the most popular 2nd gen tacomas on the road. I actually told the dealer that I wanted any color other than silver. Not that I don't like the color, I just wanted to be different. Or somewhat different when there is only a handful of colors to choose from. But this truck had all the options I wanted at the price I wanted to pay so I decided this was the one for me.

Now that I know that I have the TPMS how do I know what wheels are compatible?

Very few aftermarket wheels are TPMS ready, but there are a few. Look at different wheels, the ad will say they are TPMS ready if they are.

There are other options though, just incase you find a set of wheels that you just have to have, and are not made for TPMS. I've seen a couple people use a large hose clamp to clamp the sensor to the wheel, then install the tire and use a regular valve stem. I've also seen a few people take a 8" piece of PVC, throw the sensors in it, seal it up and pressurize it so the dash light stays off.

Then, you have the "I don't give a ****"" guys who just drive around with the red light on and no sensors to be found.

And don't forget, you have Five sensors. The fifth in your spare under the bed.

Check your spare. I think they stoped that in '09. My '11 has 4.

My '11 only has four as well, and I didn't see anything when I took out my spare. Unless Toyota has made the sensor wireless?

Yes they are wireless. Or do you have wires coming out of your four wheels?
    Metal stem = TPMS
    Rubber stem = none

When I glanced at it, I could have sworn there were wires. I must have been looking at something else. I do know I have TPMS because I have the reset button. Well I learn something new everyday. Thank you.
