Looking to change the vinyl (or pleather what ever it is) shifter boot on my transmission and transfer case shifters.

    Has anyone ever done this?

Was there ever an option in the Tacomas for black vinyl?

I'm looking to change it out to black.

You are clearly overestimating my sewing ability

    Not any more.

I'm also wondering how the vinyl is attached to the plastic trim

    Nice.

Did you have to resew the new one around that metal frame? If so, how easy was it?

You dont have to, because the new one has elastic...but its more secure if you sew it on.

    Calling TacoMX...

I'm about to order that shift boot. But I have no sewing abilities.

    Just wondering if

    1. You sewed the boot around your metal frame.

    2. If not, how secure is it?

dude...I am so sorry I didn't get back to you sooner.:eek:

I totally forgot about this thread.

I ended up sewing the cover over the frame just in the corners and half way between the corners just to keep it from moving off the frame. Working good so far. Not factory fresh looking...but pretty good IMO.

Will get a pic tomorrow AM if you want.

    If you don't mind.

    No rush.

I'm plastiderping all the trim, transfer case shift knob and center console assembly black. The gray shifter boot(s) looks friggen stupid. Want to change it to black.

I am vinyl dyeing my trim with duplicolor vinyl dye.

I already did the shifter cover frame...doing the door handles and floor trim pieces next.

    My trim is plastic.

How does yours look so far?

I'm impressed with the plastiderp... however I see no way of peeling it off like everyone claims.

Haha, not too late, peel of the plasti derp.

I am doing my door handles tomorrow so I will post pics.

    Its this stuff:

    photojpg3_ed2943a8c5973642d2f98d2e2f445094fcdc316d.jpg

The stuff is fantastic...it literally soaks in and dyes the plastic. Doesn't scratch off or anything.

You can use that on seats and carpets?

I'll see if I can peel off the derp, but like I said I see no way of doing so...
