Goodbye FJ, Hello Tacoma

Hey guys, I'm new over here. Sold my 07 FJ Cruiser for an 08 trd Tacoma!
I'm pretty excited to start on this new project. I've got the Toytec aal and 3 inch spacers so far. After I install them and I get 1.25" wheel spacers do you think 285/75/16's will fit? If not what size should I get. Not sure what tires I'll get yet.

Hey welcome to TW. You're one of the few to switch FJ to Tacoma that I've seen. Most do the opposite! lol
With a 3" lift and some spidertrax spacers, the 285's will fit with a little trimming.

When I bought my taco last year, it was a coin toss between it or an FJ... I figured the FJ would be more ideal for my lifestyle (I hardly ever need a truck bed...)

Needless to say, went with the taco for whatever reason... I think I just didn't like the "half rear doors" on the FJ. Every time we see an FJ out, I jokingly ask the wife "should I have got the FJ?" she replies "Not even close, I love your truck."

I know what you mean, all my FJ friends were like, "what?! why would you do that?" I hit the trails pretty hard with the FJ, broke quite a few things, it was getting up toward 100k, so I had the opportunity to get the Tacoma, and it's in way better condition. I'm excited to start the new build! And it has the same engine and front suspension, so I know a lot about the truck already....minus leaf springs.

 

The "suicide doors" on the FJ swung out downward. They were hard to close from the inside, pretty much a big hassle. 4 doors is definitely nice to me! Something I'm not used to. The FJ was fun though, I loved it. The Taco is so small for me coming from the FJ with a 3" lift and 34's. Hopefully after spacers, 33's, and other endless mods, I'll love the Taco more than I did the FJ!

 

My wife was the same way, "there is no way I can get the car seat in the back with those stupid half doors."

Hahaha. That is so true. If it wasn't for the car seat, I'd probably gone FJ...

They had a really nice white one, must have been a special TRD trim or something, but it looked sweet.

A week later, I run into a buddy at the supermarket by chance, and he was in it haha. I still think FJs are sweet, and from what I *hear*, they require a lot less "lift" to run larger tires... just hearsay tho...

That and she absolutely hates the rear door being one BIG DOOR.

Needless to say, I lost and bought the truck and I don't regret it. Being a home owner, I use the bed of the truck a lot more then I thought I would

 

I had 285/70/17's (33's) with no lift or anything. No rubbing at all, not even off road. Then I had coilovers and spacers in the back, about 2" in the back 3" in the front with 34's, no trimming or wheel spacers, stock wheels. So when I saw that getting just 33" tires on the Tacoma would involve the 3" lift and wheels spacers I was pretty surprised. I coulda ran 35's on the FJ with wheel spacers and the 3 incehs..

nice FJ and TACO. i thought about FJ but kinda wanted a bed to put stuff.

 

On the Tacoma? I got the spacer lift for free until I get coilovers, it needs new tires now, so I won't have the spacer lift long, but I need the wheel spacers to fit the 33's.

 

Nice truck, welcome. FJ is nice, but I think you will like the versatility on the Taco more.

 

I really want to like the FJ, and I almost bought one before deciding on my DCLB Tacoma.

I'm SO glad I chose the Taco....the limited versatility and catastrophic visibility of the FJ would have driven me batshit.

Well, with a body mount chop and lots of trimming.

I do agree though; seems that Toyota has a long history of putting huge wheel wells on it's SUVs but not on the Hilux/Tacoma. I never understood this.

Regardless, without a regear, the 4Runner/FJ/Tacoma suck with 35s. With a regear and front locker, I get nervous about front axle & CV joint problems. In my opinion, 35s come at a loss of some peace of mind on these vehicles.

I know what you mean. 34's and steel wheels on the FJ were pretty rough on the transmission. I couldn't imagine going any bigger without a lot more modifications to the suspension and everything. I hope 33's aren't too hard on the taco.

Also, does anyone know if these trd wheels are strong and will hold up off road? I was thinking about more steels, but I really like the look of these.
