Maya people aren't extinct. While the Mayan ruling class and it's blood culture might be extinct, there are actually some 7 million ethnic Maya in the Yucatan, Southern Mexico, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala.

That being said, all the doomsday talk about the Mayan calendar has nothing to do with the Maya themselves. It's mostly a huge misinterpretation (what else is new?). But it sure is bringing a lot of tourism dollars into the Mayan lands. And making a buttload of money for the gun makers.

But ultimately the problem isn't the Mayan calendar. It's the dangers of the self fulfilling prophecy. All these people stockpiling food, fuel, water & weapons and hunkering down for the apocalypse might we get what they imagined, not because of what some ancient calendar may or may not say. But because of their own paranoia run amok. If this world blows apart, we have only ourselves to blame.

EDIT: As for me, should it all go to hell, I guess I'll just make sure I have plenty of good bud on hand. Because I don't have any guns, and won't have any guns. So I guess I'm gonna die. Might as well enjoy the ride. :)
