Spent 8 years in the Navy as a Electrician and no ones hiring WTF

Not trying to be a dick, do they not process you guys for clearance when you get in? It was standard procedure at the recruiting office I went through to have the security clearance processing before you even went to boot. Different service but I can't imagine you guys would work with any less classified+ stuff than I do.

 

there's a reason for the occupy wallstreet protests. There's hardly any jobs.. and there are plenty of people like you looking for work, completely qualified and just can't get hired.

for bootcamp you go through a backround security check, not the same as obtaining a clearance. this applies to everyone in the military. you dont get security clearances till after youre in the fleet. its amazing how many people are supposed to have clearances for their jobs and they dont because they think they do.

 

I'd double check that. I did have a break in service though of 12 years so maybe it's different if you roll right in. I got credit toward vacation accrual but not retirement. I had to buy my time in (8 years). It cost me $2500.

 

Isn't there a federal law that says the company you were employed at before joing the service must rehire you upon your return to civilian life?

 

I think that applies to Guard and Reserves that are called to active duty.

 

OP you got your A&P or working on it? Your gonna have a hard time getting looked at unless u have that if yours trying for an aviation job. I know all the big companies are hiring but its all A&P required. Boeing in SC should be building up there work force soon. Their plant there for the dreamliner is about to start kicking out planes.

Good luck on the job hunt. I was an IT guy with 24 years in and it took me 14 months after retirement to get full-time work - and it's in Afghanistan. I got my degree finished during that break, though, and am continuing work on a few certs.

My lesson - shoulda got the degree and certs before retiring...

 

No. If you're a reservist and you get called to active duty resulting in the loss of your job, then yes.

sorry for restarting an old post. If you don't mind working 4-6 month a year at sea try joining the merchant marine. Good electricians are in short supply, specially ex navy guys. You work 60-120 day hitches, up to you. I met a some ex navy electricians on the job, they loved it.

Call SIU, stands for Seafarers International Union, at 301-899-0675. They'll tell what you need to do to get started. Or if you don't want to go the union route contact the coast guard licensing dept. I don't think there's many non union ships that employ electricians though. Good luck

 

Forgot to mention. Oil rigs employ electricians as well. the schedule is different though. I think they work 2 weeks on 2 off. Transocean is one of the companies they advertise on their website all the time. Never worked on rigs so can't tell more details. If the rumors are true the electricians there make loads of money

20 fucking years as a traffic signal technician with some very highly specialized skills and I was unemployed for 7 months in 2009.

 

I hear you guys.....I was an O, have a 4 yr degree and went unemployed for a while. The scary thing is most ppl have no fuckin clue about the military. Some hr managers will ask me why you need a B.A to be in the military, and have no clue between the different services. I could tell them I flew on a star destroyer searching for rebels on the Mexican border and they would be like "wow interesting didnt know we did that? But if you find a company that understands the military and knows what vets bring to the table, they will be thrilled to bring you in.

Sometimes after I interview, I'll ask how many applicants they had, for an ok job usually over 200. They dont even have the time to go through them all. The job market is a joke. I really think the real # is over 15% if you factor in underemployed and those that stopped looking.

There are several recruiting agencies that focus on vets. They usually have really good jobs with good companies lined up.
