Oil Filter questions on v6

I noticed that the Oil filter is mounted neat the top of the engine on v-6 Tacomas. I have never had a car / truck that has an oil filter sticking up like that. Normally one would crawl under the truck / car and unscrew the filter to remove it.

But the Taco's oil filter sticking up like this, how would you remove it WITHOUT spilling oil all over the place when unscrewing the filter? Is there a clever way to catch oil when you unscrew the filter, perhaps some form of a "mini" pan?

Yes there is, on the bottom of the filter base is a nipple, you must pull off the little rubber cap and insert a hose that runs from the base to your oil recycle/containment vessel, (which is at your local auto parts store) This new configuration does keep the oil from running down your arm, which is cool.

 

what i usally do is being around brake clean in the shop just grab a cap off the brake clean can, put it under the nipple pop the cap and let it drain

 

usually, i just pull off the nipple, and put an old pepsi bottle or old gatorade bottle under there, drain my oil for a bit, then unscrew the filter. by then,most of the oil has already drained, and very little is left coming outta the filter.

Ditto !! I learned so much from this forum on "how-to's" than 4 years of college + 3 more years in Grad school: dare I say it, from the school of engineering, mechanical engineering department at that!

So when I see some posts from members claiming that they cannot figure out without pics as they are NOT an engineer, I cannot say the same as I IS AN ENGINEER, not a good one I guess.....

 

I just changed my oil for the first time this evening, and I was incredibly amused at the brilliance that this litltle drain spout thing is. It was absolutely amazing. I just ran a piece of tubing from the nipple to the drain pan. but hell, even I just learned something new tonight and will toss the tubing and go with the pepsi bottle route as that is even less kneeling and bending.

What oil and filters are recommended. Im pretty sure im going with Mobil 1, but what viscosity?

 

i say its probably best to stay with 5w30(i've used pennzoil platinum and mobil1)......although in some cases(weather being one), some people are using 10w30, 0w30 and 5w20. where you are though, i think 5w30 will do just fine. as far as the filters, i use a mobil1

m1-102. you can also use the m1-209.....as it will flow a little more oil. alot of people are using amsoil filters also, as well as napa gold and wix filters.

 

I personally like to use the factory filter , my dealer gives a discount if I purchase 3 at a time and that saves trips there anyway. I have run Mobil 1 5w-30 since new and change every 5000 mi. 134k on it now.The oil filter drain funnel thing was a much needed improvement over the 1st generation Tacoma.If I dont take the time to remove skid-plates, no matter how many paper towels or even a oil soak pad wont catch the oil that runs out of the filter.The oil will then drip all over hell in the driveway..so I go park it on an incline to let drain off the skid plate.

have any of the memberes everyheard of the web site bobistheoilguy.com. he ran test on all the most popular iol and filters you will be amased at the test resultes.k&n was the worst and amsoil did not fair well in the timkin test.but believe it or not val durablend out preformed all oils even syntech. in that test
