Seat belt retractor fix

Ok so I have an '03 Excab. The seat belt (On the driver's side that I know of, passenger not sure) will retract but the tension is not the greatest. What's the easiest way to fix this? I want to be able to unbuckle the seatbelt and almost get my head taken off.

if you take all the plastic crap off around it there is probably dirt and stuff all over the seat belt mechanisim

 

So just cleaning the thing off should do the trick?

 

if cleaning all the crap out doesnt work, maybe replace the mechanisim

 

I really doubt that will make any difference. Even when brand new the re-tractors weren't really that good.

 

I was hoping this was a "How To" on fixing it. The retractors are just weak

 

I have seen writeups where people took apart the mechanism and rewound the spring so that the belt retracted better. Has nothing to do with debris in the mechanism.

haha, I know, right? Its kinda vague but puts you in the ballpark.

 

Sorry bout the confusion. I realized that the topic subject was a little confusing after I posted, but they don't let you change the thread name! If all goes well we should receive some good results on this thread, so either way we get our fix.

 

ME TOO! My passenger seatbelt will not retract and there are so many awesome fixes on here, I just figured there would be one.

 

I did the rewind... It helped a little bit but still isn't great. I've been thinking about buying an aftermarket unit, but haven't pulled the trigger... yet.

 

They're what, like 10 bucks apiece? Just kinda googled em and checked out the first couple of links. For that price, probably worth a try!

 

I wonder if you could retrofit a 3rd gen 4runner mechanism into a 1st gen taco. I never had any retraction issues when I owned the 3rd gen 4runner. I guess it's like comparing apples and lemons when it comes to fit and finish between the 3rd gen 4runners and 1st gen tacos!
