Question about regearing...

    This may sound a bit odd but,

    Does anybody know for sure if it is OK to regear the front and rear at different times so long as I don't engage 4WD?


    Question is, I am thinking 'bout swapping the rear out on one weekend (lower gears), but then maybe do the front a couple of weeks later?

    I know it will obviously destroy my power-train if I do 4WD with different ratios, but if I just keep in 2WD daily driving, will there be an issue?

    Thought about maybe taking the front driveline out if I go this route, but I'm not sure if the truck will complain if it notices it missing. Just trying to get info ahead of time.

    2010 4x4 if that matters

    Shouldn't cause a problem. That said, I'd remove your front driveshaft to be on the safe side...never underestimate your ability to forget important things.

    Personally, I'd just wait until I had parts for both differentials and take care of it one shot.

    Why bother at different times?

    I too was thinking it would be ok, but I talked to some drive-train shop today and the guy said my ABS sensors would go bonkers...

    I don't know if he misunderstood my question or what, but i tried explaining to him that the wheels would still all be traveling at the same speed lol.

    Oh well. Also, I heard late model GMs wont even drive if the sensor is missing the front driveline. Wanted to make sure nothing hokey like that would happen with the Taco

    youre talking about just the drive shaft when you mean front driveline, am i correct?

    front d-shaft has nothing to do with WSS, the other guy mighta thought you meant the front diff/cv axles

    Well, ideally one would get both done at once. But I was thinking of doing the rear swap out myself, but then having a shop do the front. I am getting a decent price for front and rear (3rd member swaps) install charges, but trying to save some poney$. Hopefully that made sense

    1) I do rear on weekend 1
    2) Next week later I take truck to them and have them do front...

    basically what I am thinking about. Otherwise, I may just have them do both. I duno if I can find the time to do front/rear and deal with all the tools etc...

    I'm pretty sure I was clear to him. I just think he was confused, which is why I am not going to shop there.

    In fact, I had many shops not even wanna deal. Go figure.

    If you can swap the rear, why can't you swap the front? It's no more complicated, just a couple extra steps to disconnect the ADD actuator...

    The setup is the same. The diff is just shaped a little differently, and the axles have joints.

    Other than that....still all just bolts and plugs.

    Ya, I have read a few really good write-ups about both.

    I haven't decided which route I want to go. I might just get the 3rds from ECGS and do it myself, or I might just pony up the cash and have a shop do complete axles on both. Not sure. But I do want to regear sooner than later to help ease moving these meat monsters of tires.

    ehhh if you use a torch to take out the front diff it simplifies things


    and ECGS ftw

    Not sure why everyone is trying to convince you to do it all at the same time if you don't want to. Cover your 4x4 switch to prevent inadvertent operation and call it a day IMO.
