I will admit that i could use more mids but not to the point of replacing the speakers anytime soon. That will definatley be one of my last mods. In fact i'll prolly just wait till a speaker goes out before i do anything with the sound

I know most people really don't care about the sound in a truck. It's more about the utility.
I worked as a road manager for a regional band going up and down the east coast for a few years after college and still get pretty annoyed at poor sound reinforcement (even at large shows). I like listening to not just the music, but the craftsmanship of the production element as well. Can't do that without good mids and I can't enjoy a 2 or 3 hours ride without the music. But that's just me...

There's also the fact that I'm a mod junkie (attempting rehab) and only have about 350 miles so have to wait for most mods. Wait... there's no break-in period for the stereo is there???

I have been trying to figure this one out. On Circuitcity.com they have 6x9s that fit the 4 door Taco. On the Crutchfield site it says no 6x9s fit.

I wonder if it is because the mounting brackets they each use?

I kinda know what you mean. I'm an Audio Visual Technician so i deal with audio quality alot. I know the speakers could be better but im happy enough with them to keep them till they wear out, or i come into alot of money for some reason.

I am similar in that I am not a sound junkie, for me I am cool with what I have. Instead of spending a couple of hundred on a new stereo, buy a couple hundred dollars worth of Exxon/Mobile stock, oh snap!!:frusty:

Hey Maverick491, Since you have the stocks out can you measure the impedance of them and post it? I'm 99% sure they're 4 ohm but I'd like to eliminate that residual doubt. Thanks, Joe.

For my part I'm happy with the stock system since I'm not listening to it most of the time. I'm an Old Goat anyway and I don't drive much except to the Hospital and Lowe's so I just use my Taco TuRD to tool around town:D

Sorry, I saw a while ago that you asked about the impedance of the stock speakers, but then I totally forgot about it.

I just measured them for you. Both the front and rear measure at 3.5 ohms.

Again sorry it took so long to get back to you.

Yes I have a 2008 DBLE CAB with 6 cd-changer and its aweul. I had FJ Cruiser with the upgraded system and that sounded a lot better (plus it had the sub) and yet many peeps complained about that...

I am very unhappy with the stereo at this point.

I just bought my 2007 Tacoma 4x2 Reg Cab on Saturday. It's still got the four factory speakers and, while I haven't "pushed the envelope" on the stereo volume yet, I've noticed that there is noticeable distortion and rattle from the bottom door speakers if I play certain music with the bass level high. For the most part, 99% of the time, the speakers sound fine at a comfortable volume, but that distortion/rattle is apparent if I turn the stereo up louder.

I had the dealership check the speakers out two days after I bought it when I took the title from my previous car that I had traded in to them. They informed me that, after testing the speakers, they didn't notice anything wrong. This didn't surprise me because, as mentioned above, the speakers sound well for me except when I play a CD with a certain sound pitch and bass level. A cursory examination of the speakers or a usual hurried look in a dealer garage might have very well not shown any problems.

My Tacoma is used with 9,400 miles on it when I purchased it and, on the day of purchase, I noticed that the bass and treble were both at top level ("5"). I tend to listen to music too loud, so I immediately put the bass and treble levels at "0" for my own listening to protect the factory speakers.

I haven't pushed the issue, as I didn't buy the Tacoma for audiophile purposes and I'm accustomed to less-than-ideal factory sound systems, but I probably will take the vehicle to another Toyota dealership while the Toyota Certified 3,000 comprehensive warranty is still in effect so that I can have another opinion on the speakers and, at the very least, just get an exchange for the same type factory speakers if needed. If I do decide to upgrade myself, I'd rather just replace the speakers and not tamper with the console system itself. I like the way that mine looks and it's very user-friendly.

For the record, I generally play my stereo at in the volume level range of 35-45.

What factory-speaker experiences have the rest of you had with your Tacomas?

I listen to mostly Classic Rock, pretty much anything 80's, and the Guitar Gods (Steve Vai, Jeff Beck, etc.) I like to hear the screaming Guitar solos in all the ear bleeding detail, ,and I like some good bass response when I listen to the old school Beasties and such.

I found the Factory speakers to be sub-par (as are most factory speakers) so I changed them out with Pioneer 6.5 inch 3-ways. Now I have all the highs lows and mids I could ever want at whatever volume I want, all with the factory head unit still. Check my write-up on changing out the speakers at stickied to the top of the audio/video section, and look on page one of this thread for pictures of the factory speakers so you can see what is actually in there.

If you can get the dealer to admit a problem and change them for free, then go ahead and do that, but I suspect that you'll find that there is not a defect per-se in your speakers but you are just experienceing the limitations of the factory speakers. If you are going to wind up having to pay for speakers anyway then I wouldn't bother with the factory replacements and just go with aftermarket. For a regular cab truck you could have a good set of 6x9s in your doors in ********* mounts for less than 200 bucks. Hell even pick up one of the factory six disc in-dash headunits from someone on here who has gone the aftermarket head unit route for like 50 bucks or so and you've got a really bad ass set-up in a regular cab rig for not much money at all.

Let us know what you wind up doing.

I have the stock system, and find the high end really lacking. With the treble on 5, it doesn't sound crisp and bright. Bass and volumn is adequate.

Thanks for your suggestions with speaker replacement.

I generally listen to a lot of synth-pop (Depeche Mode, New Order, etc.) and various alternative stuff (Joy Division, The Cure, Interpol, The Jesus And Mary Chain, etc.). It's all the kind of music that will insidiously destroy a sound system if I'm not careful.

Other than the distortion/rattle on high bass levels, the factory speakers suffice quite well. The high end does leave something to be desired as far as treble, but I've grown to expect that from factory auto speakers everywhere. It depends on the music. Distortion when I was playing a bass-heavy Depeche Mode track on the way home from work yesterday, but the stereo sounded great when I was listening to The Cult on the way to work this morning. Just gotta turn the dial down on the bass-heavy stuff.

I'll let y'all know what transpires when I take my vehicle to a different Toyota dealership for them to have a look at the speaker system. I'm inclined to agree with Maverick491 that I'm experiencing the limitations of a factory speaker system, but it's worth a shot to have them look at it before the initial warranty is up.

I have the non-JBL 6 disc in my double cab. I find that it starts breaking up above 34 on the volume control. So if I have the windows down, or the fan all the way up with a quiet CD or radio it kinda sucks. Some of the bass makes the speakers distort too so I have to turn that down, and then I can't hear it. It's kind of annoying.

However, my biggest complaint is the lack of MP3 support. I would probably replace the stock speakers, but then I also want an MP3 capable stereo like the Alpine in my car. I'm just not motivated (or have the money) to rip apart all 4 doors and dash to replace everything. Not to mention, the 6disc changer helps make it tolerable.

Ideally, I'd like some sort of video system for when we go on long trips with the kids. So it's probably going to be a massive install job involving lots of time and money. So I'm holding off as long as possible.

I got the first generation Blackbird when it was about time for the second generation to come out for $400. If you get the new Blackbird it will actually "dock" inside an Alpine head unit and display on the LCD.
