Cold air intake in California?

I've been looking at getting a cold air intake for my '07 tacoma and its saying that its not street legal in CA. Is anyone running one of these in their tacoma?

 

I dont think mine is California state legal(though listed as pending CARB approval). I dont live in california though so its not a big deal. I thing if you live in CA and run one, you wont pass your emissions inspection when it rolls around

 

ya, I know you wont pass emissions if you do it, i was just wondering if anyone out there was running it anyways.

 

Just run it and keep the stock to replace when it comes time to do your emmissions. I know people in CA that do that with other cars.

 

the trd cai has to be street legal. Its sold from the dealer as an option.

Also, u might not even need a smog to sell ur truck. When i recently sold my 06 ram(k&n btw) the dmv said something about most newer trucks not needing a smog. idk

 

i was watching mtv true life im a street racer. and they got pulled over and the cop said that they were getting cited because they didnt have the emisson stickker idk if that helps

 

oh yea i forgot about that. Most reputable companies that make aftermarket cai's should have a sticker that you just stick on the inside. But that cop was propbably just trying to find something to give a ticket for. Im sure most cops out here wouldnt make you pop ur hood unless u tricked out ur taco into some retarted street racer.

 

It's not. The TRD is legal for some vehicles but not the Tacoma. They have to be CARB approved for each model and engine type (e.g. 2.7L vs 4.0L). I believe the Volant is carb approved. The reason the dealer can sell them is that you don't need to be CARB approved for off-road use only.

I've seen some on trucks out here with the TRD. It depends on the shop as to whether or not you'll get dinged for it. I think it's the visual portion of the inspection that it would fail for. Find someone that has one in California and ask them where they take it to get it smogged.

New cars and trucks don't need smog for the first 5 years. Then after that, it has to be smogged every two years. It's probably not a big deal to hold onto the stock setup and install it for the smog check.

I just passed emissions testing in Texas with my TRD CAI, but I was almost failed due to my tinted tails!

 

What is the advantage of a cold air intake?

Probably not. Cold Air Intakes allow more air to flow, which allows more fuel to be burned. Increases power.

I have a URD. When the time comes ill just put the old parts on, get it tested, then put the URD back on. simple.

I figured it gave more power but didn't think about the additional gas it would use. Oh well, not an add on I need as she has enough power as is. I'll look for something else to spend my $$ on

The CARB website has a list of approved aftermarket parts for each car.

I use the site as an example of government run amok. Seriously, how much time and money was spent on such nonsense? And guess what? Cali is bankrupt. Great job.

 

I talked to the guy at k&n and he said that whenever they come up with a new product they have to send it to all the state emissions and for some reason CA didnt pass it. All the other states passed it but for some reason CA wouldnt pass it. He said they have to wait 2 years to re-submit it.

Cali's just strict on everything so it sucks to try and mod your vehicle out there. Here in rural NV I can do pretty much everything I want!! Dont even have to get any of my vehicles smog checked!

 

CA DMV office told me no smog needed for first 4 years on new vehicles so keep the stock intake and switch it back for the smog check. After that, smog check is only required every two years so again, save the stock intake and switch it back and forth every two years. It's fairly easy and I've never been stopped and had an officer look under the hood.
