Because as an employee, you enter into an agreement with your employer that allows for drug testing.

So if that's the case, make welfare a contract entered into by the recipient and the county/state. Add the random clause. Problem solved.

But seriously, drug testing is such a small part of the problem. The whole system (from Welfare to Housing) needs a serious overhaul. Any effort to add drug testing ought to be preceded by serious overhaul.

It's easy to throw "Personal Opinion" when sitting outside our borders.:p

I think it's a lose-lose, just when you implement drug screening, the "State" of California will need to "assist" in rehabilitation, thus creating more cost to "fix" the situation.

I think you make a contract that says if you use drugs, you're out. Period. No rehab. Out. No first time's a freebie clause either. You get caught, you're done.

Unfortunately this is something American's all contribute to, like it or not, it's been that way for as long as we had government.
Welfare - over inflated, over governed, out of control.
Fact - This will not be fixed within the next 10 years.
I don't have a solution, I just know a few fact's of our oppressed, broke, and egotistical state. Not one newely elected offical can come-in and fix this quickly, not going to happen. :(

Maybe try moving to a country that shares your beliefs then. I am sure that there are a lot of third world countries that won't ask you to pay into any social programs.

Your myopic view on things is rather boring and sad...

Good to hear, put the funds to people that really need the help, should probably extend that to unemployment benfits as well. My x's crack head mom got fired, collected unemployment and just sat on her ass and did drugs, then got lucky cuz the economy took a shit and got it extended for an even longer vacation.

Wow guys, thanks for all of your opinions and thoughts I haven't said much because I don't know what it would take to make this work but I'm all for the idea. There are some very good ideas and strong points being made.

Even after reading all of this ... my bottom line is I agree with Pugga and 4WD.
That's how they do it in the military ... fun, huh!

You Sir, are a Realist. :D

Thanks for generating this ... although now I'm a little frustrated :( ... these issues are so complicated that the solution is never very clear.

Nice in theory, but initial analysis shows IT DOESN'T WORK.

Florida is one of the first states to do this, and so far only 2% of applicants are failing, with another 2% inconclusive. 96% are testing drug free. Initial analysis shows a gross estimated savings for the state of $50k - $100k per year on a $178 million program. When costs for staffing the program are factored in, it's actually costing taxpayers more than they are saving. Now if your reason for backing such programs is to legislate morality, so be it. But so far, it's not saving taxpayers money. It's costing them more.

Not so boring and sad that you felt compelled to respond.

Take a look around, we are on the fast track to becoming a third world country as it is. You keep your head buried in the sand and oh by the way how many homeless and needy do you have living under your roof? Or are you content that what the government does with your money is really helping your fellow man?

There is plenty of compelling evidence that the dollar will be replaced by the euro as the worlds reserve currency. When that happens you would relish the idea of most third world countries over what life will be like in our economic collapse. I'm not saying this is going to happen tomorrow but within the next 10 years would be an extremely conservative estimate as some have predicted 2012 although I doubt that soon. Either way, welfare blows and so do taxes to pay for it.
