We just have too many bills to think about moving right now. two car payments and day care for the kid.

in about 4 years both cars will be paid off and my kid will be in school.

But when we do build I have always wanted a "safe room" in the back of one of the closets. big steel door with the walls made from cement filled cinder blocks, reinforced with rebar

 

I know the feeling brother! Fortunately/unfortunately we do not have children "yet" which helps the situation.

I am integrating the safe room in the basement under the porch. Rather than fill the hole with gravel as in traditional construction I will put it to use. It is essentially going to be a 5'x12' room with a steel door. The cool thing about it is that no one thinks I am crazy because we live near "tornado alley".

 

Nice. yea we are in tornado alley as well. But I have not seen any houses in this part of the country with basements though. I would like to do a storm shelter under the garage though.

that's freakin SWEET! and i don't think it's a bad price considering what you get. i mean, you and a few friends get together and turn the silo into condos and you're golden.

yea. he said somewhere in the thread that it cost somewhere around 400,000 after everything was done. he also has pics of his cars in there somewhere too.

 

Just read through a good deal of this thread... curious how hard it would be to get gasoline from abandoned gas stations? Possibly no electricity, Probably some sort of theft-proof failsafe on them... hmmm.
