It works great for me but others may find it cheaper to wait until April. I've heard the Pop&Lock are going to release a power lock and handle camera kit together in one pack.

Just installed mine. Works great...had a little bit of a time routing cable up vehicle frame over the gas tank...had even more fun finding the right cables to tap into. No one said the blue-black and blue-pink cables went into the door through separate wire harnesses so when my cable taps didn't quite tap I spent some time wondering if I was working the right cables...continuity tested the PL8521 cable run and confirmed voltage on the blue-black/blue-pink...properly sunk the cable taps and viola!

I'm glad it worked to, cause I had already closed up the tailgate with the actuator in the locked position....with extang solid fold tonnau cover, that meant my bed wasn't opening until I got the right voltage on the right wires ;-)

...oh, and I did have to throw some insulating foam behind the hardware...I had read in one of these threads that the single bolt mount left the thing making a springy sound when you closed the tailgate...It did until I foamed around it...now it's all good...

I shoved a 1" foam sanding block behind there because i looked around my garage and saw one sitting there lol.

Works great...the foam keeps is from making the boooooiiinnnng noise when closing the tailgate, and the sandpaper should keep it in place

Were you able to successfully install this? I have had a real problem getting the wiring correct.

Dude - if I get time I'll put the cover and snap a pic or two...wife's in the hospital right now so I'm sorta busy...I don't remember - off the top of my noodle - what color wires I tapped....I know figuring it out was a real pain...What year is your taco...might make my solution not applicable to you...mine's a 2010....

Step 8, now here is probably the hardest part (or most confusing.) The instructions that came with the Pop&Lock 8521 said that my 08 has a Blue with Pink stripe wire and a Blue with a red stripe wire to splice to. In my case that was wrong. I had to splice to the blue/pink stripe wire and a blue/white stripe wire. Another combination is blue/pink stripe and a blue/black stripe. Best way to solve this problem is to pull out a voltage tester and use your keyless entry to unlock and lock the doors while looking for voltage.

Step 9, press your lock and unlock buttons to see if it works. If lock unlocks the tailgate then flip your wires around and try again. to flip your wires around just go to the back and change them at the tailgate. This is much faster and easier than resplicing.

Sorry, the above message is what I pulled from my install write-up. It gives three different variations of wires.

I want one and found it on Amazon at $82.77 w/ free shipping, I read some where the Amazon PL8521 is a knock-off. does any one know if this is true? I downloaded the install instructions, very confusing, and it states in step 8 w/ 4 door models it's wired up into the drivers side rear step plate and into the "B" pillar. I have a 2011 double cab prerunner and would like to know where I'm going before I leave. Do I wire it into the driver side kick panel or the 'B" pillar?

Thanks for this helpful post. I installed my PL8521 on my 2012 Tacoma quick and easy, with your help.

I'm having a problem. Wondering if anyone has ideas to help fix it...

The lock works fine 90% of the time. But, some mornings, if it's cold outside, and the truck has been idle all night, the lock WILL NOT RESPOND. After driving around and warming up the truck, the power lock suddenly works again.

I have a Bak Flip tonneau cover, so when the PL8521 fails, I'm completely locked out of my truck bed.

Any ideas why the lock fails to work on cold mornings? I've tried just about EVERYTHING and about to give up on this, and just go with a basic key lock instead.

I don't know what a B pillar is, but in my 2010 DC, I had to pull the plastic off of the driver's side under-dash wall...I guess you'd call that the kick plate...brought the wires in under driver's side seat...and up the door sill to the driver's side kick plate where the real fun began...trying to find the right wires....Good luck and God Speed! :oldglory:
