Gun Show tomorrow... Advice?

I currently own a Glock 23 .40 cal that I keep in the truck, and a .357 magnum 6-shooter that I keep in the house. The wife says that two guns are enough, and I'm OK with that.

I'm headed to a gun show w/ the father in law tomorrow and I'm considering getting a different gun for the house. I've really liked the Glock, and am considering getting a Glock 21... Another .40 cal.

My father in law just got a Taurus Judge for home defense, and it made me think about one of those. (Basically a hand gun that shoots small shotgun shells or Colt .45 rounds.)

I want to stick with a hand gun, not a shotgun, and I thought I'd get some opinions before I go tomorrow.

look at a bunch of them, pick the one you like and buy it, you can NEVER have enough guns!!!

 

1911 in 45ACP or CZ-75 P-01 in 9mm, don't get another Glock... If you want to stay with a polymer gun, take a look at the FNP-9/40 or the FNX-9/40, or go all out with a FNP-45 - I have a FNP-45 and it is a great gun, good grip, easy to shoot and 15+1 rnds of 45ACP.

And 9mm is not a wimpy round if you can shoot a gun and you put good defensive ammo in it. I keep two 9mm loaded in my house and then 2 more 9x18mm Makarovs loaded and then a 1911 in 45ACP, all strategically through my house, I am never far from one.

The G21 45 cal. is a super nice gun. Since I already have enough Glocks I'm eyeing either a Springfield XDM Compact in the 9mm or a Smith and Wesson M&P compact 9mm. Both are an excellent choice with a great reputation and both come in a full size as well as .40. Good luck.

 

I meant a Glock 22, not 21. Sorry. I was considering the .40 to have consistent ammo.

G22 is a great gun I've put well over 2,000 rounds down range with mine with 8 jams due to bad ammo sold that box to a guy at the range and never had a problem again. It's easier to ask forgiveness than permission sometimes.

 

Glock 35 or xdm 40 or 45 .

 

Get a shotgun Saiga 12 or something you have some nice hand guns. Also look at the XDM .45 if you want. I think my next purchase will be a FN Five-seven.

 

I suggest you shop around first just as TigerFan00 pointed out. Secondly, I would like to say that you may like the Glock, but how much experience do you really have with other firearms? I used to think that Sigarms was the best, but it was my first, and since then I have tried Kimber, River Rock Arms, HK, Taurus (including the "judge", CZ, Glock, Smith and Wesson, and Kahr. After shooting several variants in different calibers, frames, and styles, I have come to find that I like my HK 45 USP Compact the best. I have put through more than 3000 rds without ever having one jam! I like the accuracy, and it makes a great conceal carry/outdoor sidearm.

It all depends on what your intent is with the weapon. For home defense I would suggest the shotgun for several reasons. (1) You already have pistols (2) You are more likely to hit your target with a spread shot (3) cheap (4) ammo is easy to modify / cheap / several variants (5) you have to consider where the round will go after you shoot someone. With the pistols you will most likely shoot through the person or possibly miss and shoot past the person, where the bullet goes after that is the scary part. With the shotgun using bird shot you wont have too much to worry about!

 

IMHO ... being comfortable with the weapon is one of the most important factors. The brand that feels right to one might not feel right to another. If it feels good and is reliable ... why change??

And as usual, All of what TigerFan is saying here makes a lot of sense to me! I'll probably carry some of it with me the next time the gun buying bug strikes. Thanks TF!

 

First of all, thanks to everybody for the opinions. I think I got exactly what I was hoping for.

Second, to the guys who say that 2 isn't enough... I agree. Two guns is a compromise b/w me and the wife, and I'm really OK with it. I'll have one for the truck and one for the car, and that's my goal. We're just weeks away from having our first child, and even I don't like the idea of guns stashed around the house. The one inside stays in a GunVault by the bed, and the one in the truck is in my glovebox safe.

I'm a good shot w/ the pistol, and I practice a lot. I know a shotgun is the ultimate for home defense, but a pistol is more practical for me right now.

Sorry about the Glock 21/22 mix up. I meant 22 all the time.

Jeff, the advice to "just look at the show then shop around" is excellent. You might have saved me a few hundred. Expect your commission check in the mail soon.

I'm going to handle a bunch of .40 guns, and some .45s today, too. I agree that being comfortable with the gun is the most important thing. I've been very happy with my Glock 23, and I've put a few hundred rounds through my father-in-law's Glock 22 (yes, I meant 22 this time ), and I'm very comfortable with it, too.

I also happen to love how quickly and easily the glocks come apart for cleaning.


(The more I listen to myself, the more I think the 22 will be the answer...)

hey op went to the show @ bjcc myself. i went in hopes to get a pistol but instead walked off with a great deal on a new ruger mini 14. cant wait to see what you got.
