NEW MOTOR OPTIONS

I got a 91 toyota 4x4 single cab pickup 5spd today with a blown engine but a great body. I have alot of money to spare and I want to make it a badass daily driver with out changing the tires im happy with the 31 inch tires. I looking for better performance and decent mpg. and of course RELIABILITY. I have been looking at some engines and parts at LCE and ebay. Tell me what you would do engine clutch exhaust etc. Keep in mind this will be my DD. Also keep my mpg decent. Here a engine im thinking of buying

22re and a 5 speed

Maybe put a header on it but other than that leave it stock.

 

In my humble opinion there are only three options for an engine replacement that I would consider. New or remanufactured engine from the Toyota dealership (don't think this is an option for a 22re anymore), good running used engine (hard to find now due to age of 22re series) or find a local machine shop with references for prior work to rebuild your existing engine.

I've worked in parts stores and sold all kinds of rebuilt engines from multiple vendors. They never turned out well.

I looked into rebuilding my 86 22r that I had around ten years ago. At that time you could still get a brand new shortblock from Toyota for 1500 bucks. The head had to be assembled from a bare casting. It probably would have cost me 2500 to 3000 for the engine itself by the time I had someone assemble it. I bought a parts store longblock for 1700 with my discount. At the time I had had no issues with the engine builder I used. That motor ran fine for 10K miles that I had it, but always burned oil on one cylinder only and had a minor oil leak at the headgasket. I always wished I had gone with a local machine shop and had a new head casting built up and put onto a factory shortblock. If you've got the money, I would do that. If not, ask around for machine shop recommendations.

 

what about the current engine is "blown"? I would try and rebuild that engine if its a 4cyl.

if its a v6 throw it in a lake where it belongs lol

 

do you want to stay with a factory correct engine?

if not, i would look into a diesel engine, more power in the same space, and better mpg

 

Lots of internet writeups on swapping first gen Taco motors into older trucks also.

These are kinda like 4 bangers, just with 2 more cylinders.

More importantly, they are I6 Engines. Again, not much different than what you want to replace, just a tad longer....and much sexier options.

 

Diesel Toyz - specializes in diesel conversions for Toyotas- 35-40 mpg with tons of torque- the 3L diesel is a great motor.

so really all everyone recommends is a R-22e and a new exhuast system with a high flow cat and some headers? turbos and superchargers kill reliablity correct? what about better fuel injectors?

 

yeah turbos generally require quite a bit of upkeep.

Rebuilding the current 22re would be the easiest and most reliable. But if you want a cool project I would drop a 5vz-fe in there.

A diesel would be cool but an absolute pain to make it work, not to mention expensive.

 

What kind of exhaust does everyone like? and what type of clutch would be could for a daily driver?

 

Not sure if LCE makes a header for the 22re but that would be my choice.

OEM clutch is fine.
