    so what exactly caused the break?

    does he still have the stock links in the rear? those things are weak and get all out of whack on the trails. often when the links get loose it will allow the whole axle housing to move around in ways that it shouldn't to say the least. there are plenty of aftermarket stuff for the lower links out there. i think AllPro has the best setup last i heard

    what year was that 4runner..maybe it's as simple as a broken inner hub gear...that's a common thing that breaks for toyota IFS axls and straight axles when rock crawling..that why many rock crawlers upgrade to Longfield inner hub gears including me, they are a lot stronger then stock..
