I drove on mine with a completely torn boot for 3 months with no problem. And that was in heavy snow/salt conditions.

OEM is obviously the best, but super expensive. I would recommend just changing the whole axle with one from autozone or oreileys with the lifetime warranty. Changing the whole axle is easy, takes 30 minutes if you know what you're doing.

You can probably drive for quite a long while with it like that. Went to install my lift when I noticed a torn boot. No idea how long it had been like that.

I carry a GSP axle as a spare. You can pick em up at Advance Auto, Auto Zone, etc. We just replaced pyroskier's CVs with GSP axles. They seem pretty good... but I kinda wonder if it's hit/miss with them. Out of the three GSP axles... 1 was missing the spare axle nut that usually comes with, 1 was missing the dust cover (that contacts the spindle), and one appeared to be unpainted/finished.

It's not difficult for one person to do... helps to have done it before and know what the hell you're doing though.:D

this is for the '01-'04 tacoma, should help ya, i literally just got inside from completing an axle swap on my 2010 from a torn cv boot myself, it was a pretty frustrating job but can easily be done by yourself. what took me the longest was the confusion from others saying the hub has to be pressed, but only if it was seperated. mine never was, so coulda been done a lot sooner. but good luck, lemme know if you have any more questions. oh got my axle from auto zone on the cheap and it looked to be pretty decent quality. drove it and it drove just like it did before.

mine had no dust covers or nut. I had to swap the seals over to the new one and re use the nut.

I got my axle refurbished at autozone for $60.

Awesome, thanks for the help guys! Ive been researching (I posted first which I usually dont do but this had me kind of upset) and I think Im going for the replacement CV axle.

New question. Seems to be lots off confusion as to how big the axel nut is:

    Says 35mm here: http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/maintenance/cv_axle/
    Says 36mm here: http://www.customtacos.com/tech/index.php?article=113
    Says 36mm here: http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/technical-chat/21192-how-change-cv-axle-01-04-add-tacoma.html
    mjp2 says 35mm here: http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2nd-gen-tacomas/45268-replacement-cv-boots.html
    Chris4x4 says 34mm and is corrected by tacomaman06 to 36mm here: http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/technical-chat/42970-trouble-removing-front-axles-2nd-gen.html

So before I order a socket at Sears.com, what size is the bolt?

The OEM axles are a good bit stronger than aftermarket from what I've heard. If it's torn and still working, why not just get it rebooted? You'd be out less money and have an OEM axle.

Can I fit Tundra CV axles on here? A neighbor was parting out his tundra (totaled) and I thing he still has his axles. Ive seen them on an LT truck but can they be added to a stock truck?

Are you sure the boot is ripped?

To me it just looks like there is grease coming from the seal around the shaft. New clamp will fix that.

I have two GSP axles in my truck and they are fine for over a year of wheeling. And lifetime warranty from advanced auto.

Looks like the boot clip has snapped, mine did the same thing. I just put a hose clamp on it and no problems since.

    ALL OF THEM!...Then some more.

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOO

You can not swap in the longer CVs without going full LT. But if he is handing them out..go get them! You might want em later :p or could sell em at least. But you can not run these without the longer lower control arm...which means you need a longer UCA...which means you need longer coilovers...haha

Can't believe everyone ignored this lol

#1. Ask yourself this question: When does something fail?
#2 Check if it just needs a clamp, Possibly see if the cv boots Allpro offers will do the trick.
#3 If its just a boot its simple, If you do it right you can rent the socket from a parts store if you dont already have the socket so you dont have to buy it and also all you would have to do is put a deposit down and you get it back when the tool is returned.

If this is in regards to my post, the only reason I say AllPRO is they are for the LT setup so they were designed to handle more abuse which means less maintenance for the owner.

I can use the outer joint from the Tundra and put it on the Tacoma axle though right? While reading up on the CV axle change, I read that the Tacoma's CV axle are not true constant velocity axles like the Tundra.

I think its just a clamp that needs to be replaced which is very good news, but sometime in the future, I would like to replace the CV axles.

    Thanks all for the help!

Sooo much easier to just use a stock replacement axle than to mess around with the tundra one.

Also I agree it looks like you just need a clamp. but my axle started that way, then quickly tore because of dry rot and my 2" lift.
