sr5 locking differential?

i have a 2010 sr5 with a limited slip differential and am thinking about getting a locking differential instead. has anyone does this?

You don't have a limited slip differential. The brake system works to make your open differential act like a limited slip. You can add a locker, plenty of people have done it.

ARB makes a good one but it works on compressed air. Downside, you have to add an on board air unit, upside, you have on board air for other things like airing back up after a trail or beach run (assuming you air down for off roading).

You could fit in a locking differential from a TRD Off Road but you need to swap the entire rear end if you want to go that route where as the ARB can be installed into your stock housing and uses your stock gears.

 

I just got a quote from a local driveline shop to drop a Detroit TrueTrac in my '11. $785 complete ($535 parts/$250 labor). I could save by doing this myself, but no thanks. Having them do it gives them the liability for getting it done right and gives me followup warranty coverage. I decided on this vs an air locker because there are no externals to malfunction and it's roughly half the cost.

 

Get a TruTrac especially if your truck is a DD. I have it in my truck and it works great

 

Isn't Trutrac just a limited slip though, no ability to lock? Is that really that much different than the traction system that uses the brakes to mimic a limited slip? Seems like if you really need a locked rear end, the truetrac wouldn't be suitable substitute

 

Most of those tru trac type lunch box lockers only lock when under power, which is when you need it most of the time.

If I ever decided I want a locker it will be an ARB though.

 

Srry for askn a q in ur post but Hey guys I have a open diff and was gonna upgrade to a LSD , is it worth it to switch to a stock trd LSD for a used price + install for 350 I hate how only one wheel spins , if I get the lsd will both wheels spin in the rain on take off ?/snow/gravel exc....

 

Hmm well I have a stock trd lsd lined up already off of a rolled over truck and it fits into my budget at the time it has 60 000km on it it is from a 07 and my truck is a 06 , dunno if I should get it but I'm sure it's better than my open diff because my truck just has the sr5 package

 

a non selectable rear locker is a BAD idea for a DD vehicle, it is not safe. it will "lock up" when making a turn which can lead to a spinout or loss of traction..it will cause driveline bind on pavement..making a u-turn on pavement can make the rear tires literally hop off the ground..

i have a Detroit non selectable front and rear locker in my rockcrawler, so i can tell your first hand that the driving attributes and characteristics of a non selectable rear locker sucks ass in the rear on a DD.

i would suggest that you look into an actual LSD unit or the ARB air actuated selectable rear locker as your true choices!!

 

Thx for the info I went and checked it out today I was contemplating buying the whole axle and doin a axle swap or just the diff and use my existing axle housing , what would be the better choice?

 

I have a powertrax no slip in mine, chirps the tires sometimes when I turn but nothing really dangerous unless u stomp on the throttle. Installed it myself too. Not to bad of an install

 

Whippersnapper:Ye both trucks are v6 only difference is his was auto and long box mine is 6spd with shrt box does that complicate things or is it the same ?

Cool thx for the info guys much appreciated and I do believe u jhodge but how exactly can I find out the ratio to double check? Take vin into dealership or stick my head down there and read the outside of diff housing?
