Straight pipe question

So someone tells me today that I can burn a valve by running straight pipes? Is that true? I have my rear cats deleted then a muffler delete with a Y-pipe to duals. Everythings welded so is this bad for the engine?

i dont see how. if anything u might loose power due to some loss of backpressure. imo.

I've never heard of damage to valves due to straight pipes. The exhaust gases leaving the manifold with less restriction should result in cooler operating temps, so i would assume; no valve damage.

 

Toyota engineers designed your exhaust system for power/mpg. Leave it alone.

 

My trucks already straight piped.

The only way you could really "burn" a valve due to an exhaust system is by running some zoomies/open manifolds/open headers.

When I say "burn" I mean after you shut the motor off, cool air can enter through whatever exhaust system is on your truck and crack valves due to the valves heat cycling too quickly.

The problem with valves when running straight pipes is not from change in back pressure or scavenging. This is a commonly talked about occurrence with motorcycles.

The valve issue is a result of the exhaust system/head cooling after its been up to temp. True straight pipe exhausts are just that, straight pipe. There are no cat cores, baffles, wool or fiberglass packing between the open tip and your exhaust valves.

Imagine what might happen to your valves once you park your vehicle and shut it off for a cold evening - with nothing but air between them and the cold, moist evening/morning air.

Rapid uneven cooling can lead to unwanted changes in valve tolerances. Condensation build up on steel valves can lead to corrosion and binding. If either of these things happen, you'll drop/break a valve and have to replace pistons, valves, bore/re-hone your cylinders etc... That's if you're lucky enough to avoid screwing up a crank bearing or blowing a hole through your motor.

 

Also, any partially open valves will let the same damage occur to intake valves, pistons, piston rings and cylinder walls.
