Local shop steering me away from BFG AT

Recommending Nokian Rotiiva AT. Same price but 65,000km warranty. Anyone here know much about them. Kal Tire actually said the BFG AT is all hype but there are alot of tires that are superior to them.

On a seperate not I am looking at 270/75/17 in the hopes that they will miss the UCA with a new OME lift.

 

They look like strictly a snow and ice tire to me. Is that what you want?

 

The BFG is a great all-around tire.
The Nokian Looks like a very good AT tire with lots of siping, which is good for wet/snowy roads.
Probably be more than happy with either choice.

No. I have seperate winters. Kal Tire said they are winter rated but they are a all season AT tire.

I also did not realize that in BC Canada your tire has to have the snow flake symbol in the winter or if you are in a accident insurance might find you liable. Therefore running AT without the snowflake in the winter is a big NO NO.

I don't know much about the Nokian tire but agree with the shop that the BFG A/T is a lot of hype. It is a good tire, there's no denying it, but for the money I think there are several other A/T tires that perform as well if not better depending on the terrain.

 

Went back to my original link. Those tires are in their summer tire catagory but meet requirements for the Severe Service Emblem or Mountain Snowflake Symbol designation rated for use in severe winter conditions.

 

I used to work at a tire shop about 12 years ago. I can almost guarantee he is 1.) only trying to push what he has in stock at his shop 2.) He gets a spiff (commission) for every Nokian tire he sells which is pretty common from more unknown manufacturers to try and compete with the bigger names 3.) the margin may be higher because they are so cheap to produce.

That's what he's doing. There is no comparison between a reputable company and proven tire like the BFG A/T TKO. It's like comparing a Kia to a Honda, there is no comparison. My suggestion, purchase what has been proven and go to another well known tire shop.

 

Nokian tires actually have a pretty good reputation... It's like comparing Cooper tires to BFGoodrich. I wouldn't be scared away from Nokian tires although your comment about the sales tactic might be correct. The BFG A/T is a proven tire and hasn't been changed in how many years? They're a good tire but far from the best.

 

Those nokians look moderately aggressive but I've owned so many sets of BFGs at's and mt's to keep me going back to them. This is going to turn in to a BFG vs every other tire thread.

 

I love my duratracs! Theyve done great in all weather so far. Not sure if they come with a cute little snow flake though....

 

I've also talked to Kal Tire about the Nokians. The sales guy said they are considered an all-weather tire: a soft compound tire that is much better than an all-season in snow, but useable in summer unlike a winter tire. I do trust Kal Tire but for the price they quoted I didn't consider it.

 

BFG AT KO is probably the most aggressive looking AT tire. For this reason it is more popular than it might otherwise be. That said, a lot of guys like 'em

 

That and they paved the way for today's A/T tires. When they came out, they were considered one of the best performing all terrain tires on the market and dominated the market for a long time. That's the main reason they're still so popular today. Other manufacturers have since made their own tire to compete with the BFG. Some actually have created really nice A/T tires that perform very well while the old tried and true BFG hasn't been changed in years.

 

Kal Tire is definitely pushin the Nokians these days. When I was there lookin for winters 6 weeks ago, they were hypin the Nokians as well

 

I'd go with the general grabber at2, much cheaper and there snowflake rated .
