I haven't actually driven the truck around too much yet. Just got it all done and am waiting to get it aligned before I do too much. Just checking it out around the house and in the barn it seems like all the clearances will be fine for minor off-road use. I suppose if I were to do anything serious off-roading I would probably need to trim the body mount that people on here are talking about all the time. For my purposes though, I think they are going to be just fine.

Again, haven't gone too far but I haven't noticed much of a difference yet. Headed back to work tomorrow and I should get a good feel for it then. I'll let ya know more later. From everything I have read on this site it seems like most people don't have much of a problem with the stock gears. The ones who do switch out seem to be the guys that are doing some pretty serious off roading. I'm not to that point yet. Not too many places where I live to climb rocks.

sorry, i didn't see the question sooner.

The CX has been a great topper so far, excellent quality. The extra money for the windoors is worth every penny. It is great being able to access all of the space inside.

Took the truck in town today and down the interstate. Can't hardly tell a difference with the 285s and stock gears. I am very happy and surprised that there isnt more of a difference.

One thing I did learn though, which I should have just listened to everyone on this site, is that I need new UCA's. A few guys had said that they got by without them, but I knew as soon as I got the lift on that I would probably need them. My alignment tech confirmed this today when he couldn't get it all where it needs to be. It is close, but can't get it perfect.

If anyone is looking for UCAs, light racing is 375 at Fat Bobs Garage right now.

I couldnt imagine living running anything higher than 4.56s with 285s on these trucks, I love my 4.88s.

I had 265s with stock gears and it sucked so bad going up the slightest incline, driving into the wind at freeway speeds, or accelerating. I remember driving on the freeway with a strong headwind and my max speed possible was 70 mph. And my mpgs sucked. After I threw gears in there, it was like comparing a moped to a camaro.

I find it's pretty good with the 265/75r16's as well. Just rev a little higher in each gear if it's a 5-speed.

There's no comparison between the 4 cylinders of a Jeep and a Yota. Take a look at the HP rating. My '10 4 cylinder is putting out around 175 HP if I remember right. My '99 6 cylinder Taco was putting out around 190 HP. Not much difference.

i want to stick with my 295's and i noticed a difference in power, a big one lol.

my question is what gear ratio do you think would get me back in the power a little and be strong and dependable. also what brand gears should i go with i want something thats premium.

thanks erik your reg cab is one of the bamf's i'm trying to keep up with there is only a handful of them on tw that can even compete with your rig man:cool:

have you thought about going to ECGS. They carry a 5 year warranty on their thirds.

Your probably best going to 4.88s

4.56 is ok for 33s or 34s but your crawl ratio will still suck. 4.88 is the best bet so you can try to get closer to a 60:1 crawl ratio.

yeah ecgs is definitely where i'm going for my parts. i'm of the mind that a warranty is nice but, i'm more interested in never having to use it.

how are the 4.88's going to act on the highway? this truck is still my dd and i want to keep it relatively civil. also whats the best quality gear meaning out of the different brands. and at what point does the ratio begin to effect the strength of the gears?

once i do this i don't want to have any issues with anything down the road. i'm not hard on this truck by any means but, i want gears designed to survive is what i'm getting at lol.

i'm not ready to jump on this just yet so i feel like a call to ecgs is just going to waste their time and i also wanted to hear some opinions from guy's that are running them as well. my 4cyl has definitely slowed down a good amount with these 295's and i think its about time i buckle down and start saving for them.

Chase is a good guy, he wont mind the phone call. He helped me out alot when i called. Hes also a member here on TW and on TTORA so you can pm him. stock gears are the strongest. the lower the gears the weaker the gears but in a 4 banger reg cab is pretty light in comparison. Nitro gears are some of the best gears. If you dont get ARB lockers, you will need 3.73 carriers for the 4.56 gears. Or you can use the stock 4.10 carrier for 4.88s
