slightly off topic. but i have looking for a decent, inexpensive compass watch with an actual compass, not just the faceplate (not sure what the point is in those)
i came across this one on Amazon but not many reviews on it. anyone have any input on some that you have tried?

Haha anytime. If I go wheeling, I demand that there has to be a minimum of 24" of snow with ice underneath it, at least 5 miles into the middle of nowhere on a FS road that closes the next day, and only 4 hours of daylight left. Anything else just doesn't really satisfy me, ya know?

 

other than walking a straight line in the country I dont really see (my) the need for a compass.

 

Because with a compass, a map, and the proper skills to use them, you will NEVER get lost.

People usually get lost when they are missing one of those 3 essential items.

 

very true. the stick and rocks method is also easy to do. so basically just carry a good topo/road map if youre ever in the woods hiking/camping/wheeling

 

I dont consider my self a survivalist, but I do like to be prepared, espeically doing desert trips where I could easily get stranded for some amount of time.

I have first aid, water pouches, a bunch of tools, lighters, matches, magnesium sticks, blankets, TP, flash lights, glow sticks, like 10 MREs, a couple knives..and hmm thats all I can think of right now. This is my newest addition to the truck...I cant believe how perfect the box fit under my bed cage

Also any good books on edible foods in the wild what to look for in plants roots stuff like that?

I've never found a book with photos or drawings that I trust enough to go out and try anything. A drawing of watercress looks just like every other thing growning in a stream to me. If you take a class, or have the hookup for a local guide, eating wild is easier and safer with less of a learning curve. Try not to die.

I've basically given up on sourcing anything wild as far as plants go, beyond the very obvious berries/fruit. Cattails are easy to spot and offer a lot of fodder in the roots/shoots. Dandelion greens are easy to spot as well.

Other than that I plan, and take it with me. If I'm ever in such a damn spot that I have to live for an extended period of time off of some type of shrub flour I grind from dried roots, for instance...well, I'm basically gonna be screwed. If you're stranded somewhere for a short amount of time, it might be better to focus on just getting out/home. You can live weeks without food and the amount of time and energy it takes to gather enough wild plants to eat just doesn't seem worth it to me.

Again, if you're looking to simply supplement your diet with stuff from the wild so you can feel close to nature or whatever (not judging), ask any old woman (like, 90 at least) who grew up in the rual parts of your area. Chances are she gathered baby polk greens, or dandelion greens, or wathercress or whatever grows local to supplement her table during the depression. I know my grandma did.

 

Nothing wrong with being prepared! You might want to look into the lifespan of MRE's at certain temps. They are reduced quite a bit when they are stored in the heat for very long. Winter time should not be too much of a concern though.

now that is a good idea. i wonder how they compare to wet o's though as far as comfort? they look "slippery"

 

I was wondering the same thing. They don't look too comfy. The WO's I had where great!
