what does 4x4 mean?

    hi all, sorry i am not very good with cars. what does 4x4 mean? something on the 4 wheels? my regular cab is 4x2. is this good or bad? thank you

    3” spacer lift, 285/75/17 KO2, Spidertrax 1.25” spacers
    4x4 = 4wd = Four wheel drive. All four wheels have the ability to power the vehicle. The truck is a RWD until 4x4 is engaged.

    4x2 = 2wd = Rear two wheels (on a RWD vehicle, like our trucks) power the truck. No way of getting power to the front wheels.

    thanks! so this is only a big deal for people who go offroading? i just drive mine around to work and school. is there an advantage for each? why would one choose one over the other? thanks again

    you would choose 4x4 if youre going to do some offroading....... in dirt.... or mud.... or rock.... 4x2 is good for street.

    4x4 is also good for those that live in the snow. It helps alot in snowy/icy conditions.

    I think the origin of the first "4" came in the early 1900's.

    4X4 meant 4 wheel vehicle, 4 wheel drive
    4X2 meant 4 wheels vehicle, 2 wheel drive

    I'm pretty sure on most new truck / auto stickers it will say, 2WD, 4WD, or ALL Wheel Drive

    "What does 4x4 mean?"

    The first digit refers to the number of wheels.
    The second digit refers to the number of driven wheels.

    4x4 (four by four):
    A vehicle with four wheels that's powered by four wheels (4WD)
    4x2 (four by two):
    A vehicle with four wheels that's powered by two wheels (2WD)

    A 4x4 has a transfercase that locks the front and rear drive together, where as an AWD has a viscuse copling allowing slip between the front and rear. There are some 4x4's that also have this viscuse diff, so as to have AWD, and then be able to be locked in 4WD.
