"I am ready to by X car today". Work dealerships against each other. Call the other dealership right in front of them. Negotiate final price only. Aim for the Edmunds.com as your final price, so start below that number. The less you talk the better. Take a confident car buyer with you.

Well I mean like can't a buyer either finance through their bank instead of the dealership and go into the dealership with full cash in hand then thats the same as paying cash upfront from the dealers standpoint.

I am a very confident car buyer. I've walked out of a dealership before with the salesman yelling "your really going to let your wife drive that piece of junk"..... they kept on playing number games with me bringing out seemingly better deals involving a trade in and financing and when I asked for a pen and a pad of paper the salesman got smart with me asking me where I was pulling all these numbers from. I have excellent credit and I know what I can afford, financing is no issue with me as I know it will get paid off early. I am very good with numbers.

Pretty much all I do is over estimate my expenses for each month that way you're never left with that "OH SHIT" scenario and at the end of the month and you always have "a little extra" to do something with.

Dealers do make more money from financing. Kick backs do exist. Using the cash in hand trick can actually hurt your odds of a better deal. If they are not going to make that money from financing they'll try to make it off you instead. Do not let them know how you will pay for the vehicle until it is time to pay. And believe me. They will ask. Repeatedly. Lie if you have to.

The end of the month is not the best time to purchase. The beginning is. The reason is the salesman may have already met his quota by the end of the month. In that case, they are not looking to meet a quota. They are looking to make a bigger commission check. At the beginning of the month, no salesman has met their quota and has no clue if they in fact will.

Monday or Tuesday early morning is your best shot. Nobody is shopping at the dealer at that time. Avoid the weekends. They are always packed.

Shopping around online is a good idea. Internet sales sometimes has more power to make a deal. Email conversations with a salesman allows you to keep control and not impulse buy or fall prey to a trick. Plus you won't get tag teamed by multiple salesman and sales managers.

As long as you are flexible on the vehicle and are not in a rush, you can get a deal out there. Oh and NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER tell them how much you want to a pay month. Shop by out-the-door final sale price. Not monthly payments.

    Good luck.

Never one issue with our 2007 v6 RAV4..........and that ugly GMC, or the same Chevy with better looking front/rear aren't gonna have any issues? Very doubtful you'll have more problems on the RAV4 than either of the Chevy's. You will also have more resale value on the RAV4.

I would agree to an extent. The dealership gets money from the manufacturer based on the volume that they sell. The new car sales manager knows the numbers and approves 99% of all sales amounts. I haven't met a salesperson yet that doesn't work hard to get one more sale in for the month if they can.

Personally, I would narrow my choices down to one. I would figure out what options package I want and the cost of the vehicle with the package. Then I would determine what I wanted to pay. No car sale should take more than 30 minutes not including the finance department dealings.

I wasn't flexible on my truck. I could have gotten one of the tan colored Tacomas for $1000 less from another dealership. I always shop by final out the door price. I'm glad to know I'm already on the right track and I really appreciate everyone's input.

the reason is 99.9% of car salesmen are rat bastards after your hard earned money i have seen and heard stuff in the business over the years that was absolutely horrible.

I sold Hondas for a few months :crapstorm: The sales guys (including sales managers) don't get anything off of financing, but the dealership does get kick backs on the back end for that (the finance guys & GM). That's one of the reasons salesmen HATE finance guys! Honda offers the sales guys the "car of the month" they get $100-2000 from Honda for what ever car is on special that month. The sales guys car about bottom line price, that's why end of month and crappy weather are great for buying, the sales guys are worrying about making something that day, even the bare minimum for sailing a car that day ($100 when I was doing it).

Having your funds squared away before you go in can really help you. I think you can go straight through Honda Financial before you ever go to a dealership, but I would only do that if they are offering a 0% special. Otherwise you can usually find a better deal through your bank, Credit Union, etc.

Sounds like you did awesome with your Toyota, I would do the same thing with whatever you buy.

Getting ready to buy my wife a Ford Flex, her father is retired from Ford, so we get the Z plan. One set price for each vehicle, no negotiating involved. NICE!

So before I start emailing I need to get a preapproval of a loan of some sort?

It helps. At least you can compare that with what the dealer offers you. On my last car I got a pre-approved loan from my bank at about 4.5% interest, but then the dealer started me at at the "great deal" of 6%. With my bank's offer in hand I could negotiate and magically they were able to give me 1.9%.

    What he said.

    http://www.hondafinancialservices.com/

Also, do you bank at a Credit Union? They usually have some of the best deals. Also, talk to your bank. Who is your truck loan through? Ask them too, if you can. You can get an idea of what the lowest interest rate is WITHOUT having them run your credit. If you know your score, they can give you a better estimate as to what they could do for you.

If you are preapproved, the sales manager is more willing to give you a better deal, especially if you are prepared to leave without buying. You are a sure thing that can't get screwed up by the @$$hats in financing! He will do what he can to get you into a car right then and there.

If you have outstanding credit then you should qualify for the low interest rates offered through the manufacturers. Since the CRV is newly redesigned I don't know what kind of interest rate they are offering right now but for the most part usually a bank or a CU can't beat the ultra low percentages that a manufacturer offers on new inventory.
