how good is an LSD offroad

    just wondering what types of obstacles you've made it through with the mechanical LSD as opposed to the locker. how much better is a locker? how much better is an LSD over an open diff?

    My previous truck was TRD SPort with the LSD diff and it got me thru some thick stuff, course not as good as a locker but it will get the job done, plus its great at laying down some rubber on the road :burnrubber:

    I think you've got that about right.

    Lockers will help you in many many situations.
    LSDs will help is some and you can use the "poor mans locker" in some cases. Poor mans locker = e-brake application when you have a tire light on the ground or up in the air. I've taken my LSD alot of places and even convinced some folks that I had lockers with the e-brake trick...but I would rather have an ARB Air locker in the back. And maybe a marlin crawler box up front....
    Open diffs aren't useless....but they can be a challenge.

    Ummm I don't think its a straight swap. Though I don't think theres any electronics on the mechanical LSD so maybe.

    e-LSD's are a joke IMO.


    Heres mine gettin thru some hairy stuff.

    Its crude, but standing on the brakes with the LSD got me through alot of shit.

    Does not compute. You think e-LSD's are a joke, but you are doing the same thing an e-LSD does: braking the spinning wheel.

    To clarify, I'm not saying I would choose an e-LSD over a mechanical LSD, what you said just didn't make sense.

    If you are going to take the time and money to install a mechanical LSD, I'd go straight for a locker.

    Like others have said, anything is better than an open diff. Including a mechanical LSD.

    I moded 1999 Taco so much it had turned to Land Cruiser
    Lol thats because his LSD is broken :D. If it its working then no need to stand on ebrake. Simply apply power and go.
    There is enough torque in that thing to pull truck in 2wheel stance. (disclaimer unless you have TRD LSD installed after the purchase)

    OP there were two LSD's in 05-08
    One came from factory which was 8 clutchpack HINO unit.
    Other LSD was from TRD parts which was Eaton made LSD, installed by Toyota dealers.

    The TRD sport mechanical LSD is directly swappable in 05-08 non TRD both have same size 3rd

    You can see the down falls of having an LSD here. When flex'd in the rear I don't have enough to get over the obstacle, but once both rear tires are touching I can make it through.

    I would like to add that an LSD will help you through many many situations, without you even knowing you lost traction.

    But the E-LSD doesn't have the mechanical advantage. A friend and I just went up into Tahoe a couple months ago. He has e-LSD, I have regular. I made it through without issue. He required a tow. LSD's do not brake the wheels, there is a mechanical clutch in them. LSD's require torque to work. You get a tire off the ground and they won't work, no traction, no load. Pressing on the brake simulates traction and induces the torque required to lock it up.


    Now, take an e-LSD, which is an open diff controlled by a braking system, no mechanical clutch to control which wheel gets the power. All you're doing is power braking. If I'm wrong, then you should be able to take a completely open diff non-TRD (or any other truck for that matter) and hold the brakes and climb up a hill right? Go try it :)


    I was skeptical about them either way... but when I saw what happened on the trail awhile back, it confirmed my belief.
