My friend is trying to sale his 1989 Toyota Pickup 4x4. Its a 5 speed and has 176k on the motor and 217k on the body. Body has a couple of dents, but it pretty straight. There is a small spot of rust at the tailight on the driver side about the size of a dime. How much would you guys say its worth or he should ask for it.

Ask for more than $4,000. Then sell for four. OR MORE. Live in East TN,Put my 91,4x4 on Craigslist for 3995--IMMEDIATE responses--SOLD in less than a week.
It was the one in the pic to the left. One TUFF TRUCK-still miss it. The newer trucks are not nearly as rugged.
Of course on craigslist, you will get people that will try to lowball the price=just tell them TOO BAD--thats the price.
Had one tell me it was only worth 1200--I said bullshit-DAMN tires are worth that much -BYE

I would pay up to around $3800 for that truck. Depends on what shape the tires are in, and what work/tuneup has been done recently. If the frame is rust free, all the better. Blue Book values for Tacomas are WORTHLESS. Only we understand how well these trucks hold their value ;)

Eight years ago I sold an 86 regular cab 4x4. 185K on truck, 25K on trans rebuild, 8K on engine rebuild. New alternator, starter, wires, fuel pump, water pump, blah blah blah. I sold it for $2,800. After they left I got one more call on it (still in the autotrader mag). After that, nothing. And it still looked AWESOME.

It does seem like they are more of a "Toy" now to most people. Back then they were still new enough that people would buy one to use as a daily driver. Now those people are buying 1st gen Tacos with the newer engines. Not sure if them being older and more scarce now makes them worth more or less.

I would start at 4K and be prepared to take less. It's really worth how much someone is willing to pay. If he's got a lot of time then he could just wait it out, otherwise I don't think he's going to get more than 3K for it.

If it's a 4 banger it will be worth more than a V6.....reason being is that the 4 cyl engine is more desirable in Mexico, Central and South America....I'm sure you'll get a few calls from a few Mexican Nationals wanting to buy it only to resale in Central America for $8k.

    I would say around $3500.

before reading any of the other responses, i'd say $3500. reading the other posts, seems to be in the ballpark. you could probably hold out for $4K, but it might take longer. might as well start high, you can always reduce the price. always seems to be strong demand for older yotas.

Well i talked to him today, and well he sold it today for 2500. He had bought it 2 months ago from another one of my friends and actually got a hell of a deal at 1500.
