My Taco getting the throwout bearing TSB done

My taco is getting the Throwout bearing TSB done at 46k miles. It has been making the noise for a while, but it took 3 visits to get the dealer to hear it.

I took it in Monday, and they tore it apart and found the bell housing was gouged, so they had to order a new one. Snow on I20 kept it from getting to the dealer Tuesday, so I am hoping it arrives today.
I didn't realize it when I took the picture, but my whole transmission is on a rack under the truck. I would love to get in there and look at all that, but I am sure that is not allowed.

Hi Mike,

I did this myself and took a lot of pictures from multiple angles of the transmission/transfer case and all of the TSB parts side by side with the old ones. Not quite the same as looking yourself but I can post them for you if you want.

 

Wally, you replaced your T/O Bearing??? how hard was it??
my truck is a 2005 and bought it almost 2 years ago when it had 33000 miles... i hear the chirping noise soon after... i took it back to the stealership and the mechanic rode with me and told me it was just wear and tear... i just found out there is a TSB... maybe i should go back and tell them about it... truck has 60000 miles now and the noise is driving me crazy...

I have changed a throwout bearing before on a front wheel drive car, so I am guessing this would be pretty different.

 

may I ask what the sound sounded like and where you heard it.

 

Mine sounded like a fan belt or something at first. I popped the hood and immediately knew it was coming from the transmission underneath.

If you stick your head under the truck you hear the chirping noise coming from the tranny. Mine was awful. Could hear it plain as day driving down the highway.

Funny mine is getting the same thing done right now, along with a new fan. Both chirping noises got annoying enough to take it in.

 

I was putting in a new engine at the time so I just did the TO bearing TSB myself since I had the transmission out. I figured it was cheap insurance ... here's a copy/paste from another thread where I posted the pics.

Here's a picture of the aluminum quill with 25K miles on. Despite appearances in the photo, it's actually quite smooth with almost no wear so I'm amazed when I hear of people who have had significant issues when mine is OK.



Now for the rest of the job ... the new 1GR-FE with the clutch installed.

I forgot to answer "How hard was it?".

I guess that's a relative question, depends on your definition of fun and how much spare time you have. It's doable with a normal set of tools and a torque wrench. I had better things to do but I'm too cheap to bring it to a shop.

Got mine back yesterday, and all seems well. I hope it lasts long term.
Now all that is left is the damn annoying noisy fan motor, but it doesn't appear there is a permanent fix yet.
