Weld on sliders in the northeast

For any of you guys in the northeast or anyone who is familiar with the salt belt, would you have any reservations putting weld on sliders on your truck? I am concerned that the grinding the paint of necessary for welding will inevitably start to rust without me knowing. I understand that you have to repaint it once you're done welding but it seems like it can still rust underneath the gusset plate. Am I worrying too much or is this a legitimate concern to have.

Oh and by the way... the reason Im asking is because Im getting in on the BAMF group buy. As all of you should. We only need a few more orders to get the full discount.

imo you are worrying too much. the welding is going to have little to no effect on the ability to withstand rust, provided you primer it properly and repaint after the welding is done. don't think twice about it.

 

Yea I will end up doing it but I just wanted to hear if it was a bad idea or not.

well I am quite experienced with salt and rust but if you repaint everything properly and put some Rust-Oleum over it if you want to be safe. When everything is said and done all your metal will rust away regardless up here. I've had my sliders on for just over a year and I haven't had any rust problems yet. sprayed the welds with 5 or 6 layers of black and a quick layer of rust-oleum when I installed them. Spot free ever since.

 

IMHO, you have a valid concern, as rust will form between the flange and the frame rail, as any rustproofing will be burnt off between the two during the welding. It will eventually force the two apart, with enough force to bend both sides. Eventually is the key word though, but if long term happy tacoma ownership is your goal, I'd opt for bolt on sliders if you can find a suitable alternative.

mine are welded on as well and I sprayed them with rustoleum bed liner (several coats). No issues whatsoever

 

Thats a good idea. I think I will spray mine with bedliner just on the gussets after welding in an attempt to seal it a little better.
