Ok, so I was driving to work this morning on the highway travelling around 60km/hr and accelerating when I noticed a really bad vibration that seemed to travel the same direction as the truck (front to back and back to front). You could actually see the passenger side seat rocking back and forth.

I slowed down and it seemed to reduce the vibration. Then I came back up to highway speed and the truck vibrated really bad. In the rear view mirror it looked like the box was rocking back and forth. I googled a couple of things this morning and it appeared really damn close to what they call a 'death wobble'.

    Anyone else experience this.

I would start by getting under the truck and going over everything. Check your lug nuts and make sure they are all torqued properly. Look for play or any signs or damage in your front end. Check all four tires and make sure they aren't warped or bubbled. Beyond that, I'm at a loss. Could be any number of things. I wouldn't hesitate to get it to your mechanic and have a professional look it over. That is definitely not normal and doesn't sound safe to be driving. Good luck, keep us updated.

First thing I'd check is where the drive shaft attachs to the u joints. Make sure at each connection the hardware is tight. Also examine the u joints for tightness when trying to rotate.

Beyond that I'd check out the wheels, tires & lug nuts.

    Let us know...

could be anything..like what has already been suggested, look over the obvious stuff..bent or dented driveshaft, make sure all the lugnuts are there etc etc...

maybe a rim is bent or even the wheel wieghts are missing from a wheel making the vibrations..too many variables to what can make the truck shake like that which makes it hard to diagnose over the internet

I agree with the others on checking things. Generally speaking a vibrating mirror is from problems in the rear and a vibrating steering wheel is problems in the front.

Another thing to try is jack up the rear either use a floor jack on the differential or jack stands on each side and run it in gear and watch for vibration signs. Get your buddies to help, be carefull you don't want an accident.

    1. Check tires/wheels. (I'm betting it's a tire delam or wheel weight was thrown)

I had a GSXR that used to do this above 90 mph. Front tire was starting to separate.

Have you had it in the shop recently? Maybe something wasnt torqued to spec?

+1 on checking your lugs on your rims, and checking your tires for damage.

I did have something similar and it was the rear pinion seal starting to go, but it never got that bad.

I'd start by checking the lugs, u-bolts and drive shaft bolts/connections for play. Make sure none of the tires have bubbled or warped. Next could be a bent rim or you could have thrown a wheel weight (or strip of wheel weights). Did you recently have any work done on the truck? If so, I'd start by double checking that. If you can't determine what's causing it, I agree with others that a mechanic should have a look.

Check the carrier bearing on driveshaft.

Stupid question. But what is the carrier bearing?

I am going to swing into the tire shop and have them tighten the lugs on the way home. I will inspect the tires for any issues as well.

I ordered the OME lift and new Dakars so I will be getting under the truck soon.

This problem is not occuring often and it appears very random. Last time it happened was about 2-3 weeks ago but no where near as severe.

Could be anything! Start by inspecting wheels, drive shaft components, suspension.

My random highway speed vibration ended up being a worn outer tie-rod.

What ever you do don't try this.
    1. not a good idea to lift by the diff
    2. raise the rear in the air on jack stands, spin the rear wheels at highway speed until it vibes and jumps off the jack stands and launches into whatever might be in front of it.

You have a 2 piece driveshaft, its held in the center by a bearing which is held up by 2 bolts. One or both could have backed out. That would be violent enough to cause your issue
