one and done should be the law, one positive test and your beni's stop for life... that would help off set the cost.

should widen the drug test to include many Rx drugs also.

This is exactly the kind of thinking we need.

Does anyone remember the kid who got caned in Singapore? I think it was in like 1994 or 1995. The entire world was against this but they held their ground and punished him exactly as their law was written. The good ole' USA needs to be following our laws exactly as they are written, meaning remove the loopholes. If the laws were not able to be twisted around by some lawyer or rights/activist group things would definitely change around here.

Now you know this is an outlier.

Although I am amused at OZ calling you out on your trolling. You and Jim hang out much?

And I'm not deflecting anything toward taxes. If testing Welfare recipients happens, how do you think it's going to be paid for? I'm sure some magical benefactor from Blue Cross is going to swoop in and donate all the testing kits, personnel and training to relieve the burden from the oppressed, overtaxed workers of America...

I agree with this. Reform is the answer, not additional testing.

Close the loopholes, make it harder to get on/stay on.

i don't think it's so much of an outlier... this is what you get when you have a dependency class that is never held accountable to those to whom are fully held responsible for their sustainence.. do you let your kids run your home, or do you make the rules, as head of household, the "provider"? should the inmates run the asylum, ...et. al. sometimes it's easier to cast aside ones blinders by contemplating equally absurd notions..

...and how am i "trolling"?... #1 i didn't start this thread, #2 the thread topic is "controversial" by nature, and #3 i've stuck to the general subject matter here of welfare, propositions for testing, ..accountability, etc.. so, feel free to present evidence of my trolling here :)

You don't think that a woman with 15 kids on welfare is an outlier? Seriously? 15 kids?

That video is so full of stereotypes and assumptions. First, whites make up the largest population of people on welfare (37-38%) and the average person is a single mother in her 20s-30s who has never married and has 1 child.

Here's a study from the University of Texas breaking it down.

And another list of statistics for backup.

Oh, and here's the DHS information for TANF for fiscal years 1995-2009. Have a look and tell me what you find...

This is the example of trolling I am speaking of -- intentionally posting inflammatory and extreme examples of said "topic" to garner response from people who are making legitimate points and observations. You throw up a piece of propaganda but fail to even attempt to look through the smoke and mirrors to the truth in the numbers underneath. You don't even attempt to reach an understanding, just spout your agenda and your misguided assumptions to what you think is "fact" in attempts to solicit response.

That, my friend is a troll. It's not as base or asinine as others, but a troll nonetheless.

Lost Humanity brings a little common sense to the table here, thanks for the stats links.

I dont see how typical "small government" conservatives would support increasing government supervision and oversight with programs like mandatory drug testing. Why whitewash it like this? ;)

sometimes "extreme" examples are required to arouse one's attention... i'm not insinuating that 15 kids is the mean, it certainly is an outrageous example, but it drives home the point that failures and fraud are real problems..

..also, looking at your link for U of Texas, the breakdown by "race" for welfare mothers is:

"african american" and white are virtually the same, however, ...those distributions are not "normalized" by "race/ethnicity", ...if you factor in the demographic makeup of each of these "ethnicities" w.r.t. the total population,"african american" is going to be much higher... why do it this way?.. well the PC police can't have their cake and eat it too, because if you want meaningful statistics on the basis of "race/ethnicity/whatever", ..you're going to have to normalize the data by said populations.. so, i don't think the video is as misleading as you imply... ;)

See OZ's post about "painting with the same brush."

This is the exact example I bring to highlight your trolliness. This isn't a news outlet, it's a forum - and like most agenda-wielding Americans, you chose the extremities to rally a cause which in no way represents the actual statistical reality of the situation.

Furthermore, if you actually WATCH the video, the mother was removed from assistance, jailed and had her children placed in the custody of the state -- none of which constitute "failures or fraud." The courts gave her ample opportunity to abide by their regulations, and when she failed to adhere to their parameters, they took action.

Looking through the DHS workbook, the TOTAL number of US families receiving TANF in fiscal year 2009 was 1,726,560. The average number of family members was 2.3. There was a 0.0% of families receiving assistance with a family member count of 10+, with only Alaska, Michigan, and Washington reporting 0.1% of families in their states with 10+ family members.

Additionally, the average number of recipient children per household was 1.8, with 50.8% of those recipients belonging to 1-child households.

Holy shit, dude. You win Most Racist Post Through Statistical Expression of the Year.

So, because the Texas report of TANF recipients did not include a "Mixed" option (or because, in your opinion, those with recipients of mixed-race checked the "White" box), you want to regress the data to blur the lines to reflect the multiracial profile of Americans.

Again, delving into the DHS workbook -- in 2009 the State of Texas had 48,635 families receiving TANF. By then, Hispanics had taken over the top spot with 57.5% ethnicity, followed by African-American at 25.5% and White at 15.6%. (with a margin of error of 0.1%)

The total US population receiving TANF was broken down as such:

    African-American: 33.3%
    White: 31.2%
    Hispanic: 28.8%
    Asian: 2.1%
    Native American: 1.3%
    Multi-Racial: 1.8%
    Hawaiian: 0.6%

With a margin of error of 1.0%

Regressing to the number of CHILD TANF recipients, it breaks down like this:

    Hispanic: 33.5%
    African-American: 33.1%
    White: 26.1%
    Asian: 2.6%
    Native American: 1.2%
    Hawaiian: 0.7%
    Multi-Racial: 0.0%

With a margin of error of 3.0%

Breaking it down further, the average cash assistance per family by number of recipient children goes like thus:

    US AVERAGE: $388.63/month
    One Child: $324.10
    Two Children: $407.71
    Three Children: $496.30
    Four or More Children: $591.58

With a 0.02% margin of error.

TANF recipients are not riding the Gravy Train by popping out more kids.

These are extremely large sample sizes, so regression is minimal. It's not like we're dealing with samples of 500 cases.

So looking at the data, it would appear that the video is extremely misleading.
