op, do you have any more info on the suspects? age? are they grown men or punk teenagers? that will also give you better tactics and what to expect. if teenagers, they will more thank likely be scared to death if anyone was home. if grown men, use all you've got.

its funny how this thread has been blown into a swat team attack preparation thread.

I don't have much information on them yet. I will be talking with my neighboor as soon as both of us are home from work, get all the details she knows then go to the Sherrif. I'll be sure to get every single detail from her. LOTS of awesome advise so far, thanks again guys.

    Sunner,

Knowing Kern County, you may not have a deputy around to respond. Dont know what rural area around bakersfield you live but the KCSO is spread pretty thin unless you live in East Bakes or the Dale! Definitely get the gate fixed, make sure all windows locked securely(buy window locks) call ADT and have them come out to try and sell you a system and do a free "theft assessment" of your property(no obligation to buy).

Had a similar situation few month back with a van coming buy to "Clean my Carpets" (i have wood floors) and he literally stepped into house and looked around and started to make comments to my wife(I wasnt home at time) about our house and "rats"(yorkies) and how much they are worth. My wife asked him to leave and he kept talking. Luckily two of my 6 foot tall sons came out and asked if their was a problem and the man quickly excused himself. The man did return 2 more times to ask about a demonstration again and talked about cleaning the wood floors now. Third time he returned there were three additional males in van parked outside with no visible cleaning equipment. My wife got rude with the guy and said to leave because it was now harassment or she would call police. They have not returned. My other son called me at work and I called the PD and they patrolled the neighborhood. Come to find out there were three other burglaries in area in the weeks leading up to this with same MO. BTW-I have ADT system w/signs and stickers and a loaded 870. Also have security lighting outside now.

Good luck and hope everything works out!

Thanks for the info, you are right, patrols are very rare here in South Bakersfield, burglary seems so popular in Kern County, I'm sure it is elsewhere too since there is little police can do to actually catch the guys after the fact, the only thing you can do is take precautions before hand to prevent it in the first place.

Is your breaker box on the outside of the house? I ask because a few years ago now we had an issue at my parents house where an suv with a couple of young guys stopped near the house and ran up and turned off the power to the house, They also turned off the power to 3 of our neighbors homes. Thankfully they didn't break in to any of our houses. I think it was most likely a prank, or a test to see if anybody was home. That was the closest we have come to having any sort of break in so far, thankfully. So if your breaker box is easily accessible I would find a way to lock it. Also another thing you could do is get some metal security screen doors. My parents have them on their house and it makes it so it would be very difficult to enter the home, and they look good too.

It seems that crime is getting more common, Or at least I am hearing about these problems more often. I can't stand thieves.
I hope it all works out okay for you.

My box is on the outside, I will put a lock on it but I dont think it will be too hard for someonce to pry it open, its a really old house and really old style box.

We had the same problem at our office. You can get a full DVR Camera system at Costco for ~ 300.00. We purchased one with 4 cameras, and purchased an additional 2 camera. We did the installation, and it call cost less that 600. Camera system was a Q-SEE.

    Good Luck.

The part about killing them will make them either 1) stop 2) bring guns in which case you can kill them

Screw all the security systems and cameras, I need to find me a wife like that :D. All joking aside though, that was a tragedy. At least both her and her kid are safe and alive.

    Or they can kill you.

If you're not Rambo, or you don't have training on building clearance/tactical shooting, don't plan to ambush the intruders. They will likely kill you with you own gun.

And the sign/sticker stating the house is protected by Smith and Wesson is a bad idea as well. Your Smith won't fire itself while you're at work. What it tells a smart burglar is that there is a gun in the house for them to steal as well.

let them take your things, that's why you have insurance. Nothing material is worth risking your life. Get cameras that will record their cars, license plates, faces, etc. Have the police alerted.

Hopefully you will get a plate # next time they scout your house so they will be caught/questioned before anything bad happens.

A cool idea i've had is stick a tracking device on something that you know for sure they will take :D
