Ive had a first gen and second, and I would trade my second gen for anything. I do like the first generations alot, but the second generation feels more my style. Both amazing trucks

I have done all the hi-pro mods for a life time, since I got this truck at a great price, I will be happy with showroom new.
Just bought an '02 4WD TRD today so guess where my vote goes...
I found an '02 with 25K miles on it, always garaged and always factory maintained. The only old rubber on it are the original tires (which have a good 10K miles left on them) and the windshield wipers. It's so pretty I'm afraid to take it off road!

Very nice looking truck! I am just happy that I was able to find a nice truck myself, I like them all!
Way back in 1981 my grandfather bought a fully loaded 82 Toyota sr5 and we both loved it, but my grandmother bugged him for years that it was too small, and he traded it in on a 1986 Dodge ram (ugggggg) and he had tears in his eyes.

Awesome find. I looked for a low miles, well maintained 1st gen 4x4 Xtra Cab stick for something like 8 months before I broke down and bought a new 2nd gen. Then, wouldn't you know it, the perfect 1st gen popped up on Craigslist in Glenwood Springs like 3 weeks later. Grrr.

I'd want both, keep my 1st gen for my fun beater truck, & a sweet four door 2nd gen for my clean truck. Problem is I love beating on my trucks... I'd never be able to drive the 2nd gen :p

Well, since I have a 2nd gen an never had a 1st gen I would have to say that I LOVE what I have, and vote for 2005+ because I couldn't imagine having a better truck then what I have, a 2006 TACOMA TRD, haven't had any problems with it yet! I'm sure the power of the V6 trumps the 1st Gen easily, and the room is outstanding! I'm 6'4" and 250lbs, very comfortable for me. Yes, will need to wait a few more years to determine dependability comparisons, but so far so good with me 2nd gen!!

i own the second generation, but the first generations are the best hands down!!! the second generation tacomas are a bunch of road queens...they wouldnt be able to do half as good on the offroad as the first generations.

LOL ain't that the way it happens?? I wanted a 5 speed, 6cyl, 4wd, extended cab and when I saw it I knew I had to have it. Luckily I got first dibs and even though I paid full Blue Book I think I got a good deal.

The former owner drove it an average of 2500 miles a year. I drove it 1800 miles to our ranch in Oklahoma and back the first week. My mechanic said it looked like it was new. All fluids full and clean. I also got 20-22 mpg on the highway. Still loving it. Here are some pictures.

Very nice truck. I would have taken a nice PreRunner but I've already used the 4wd in my new Taco so glad I went for 4wd.

I like the power behind the 4.0 in the 2nd gen but they get spanked offroad by the 1st gen.

i like my 1st gen taco. i was talking to a guy that had a 2nd gen and he said that he has had nothing but problems since he brought home from the showroom. he said it was the worst truck he has ever owned. i was shocked by all the bad things he said. i have purchased 3 new toyota's and all of them have been great. i have 275k on one and 250k on another and my fjc has 100k. my next one will be a toyota!

If I go off road, I drive the 1993 1st gen truck. If I want to get down the pavement fast and comfy, I drive the 2011 2nd gen.

1st Gen. I'm on my second 1st gen. First was a '99 Xtracab V6 5spd 4x4. Black. Died from broken frame.

Second is my new-to-me '02 Xtracab V6 5spd 4x4 TRD. It's newer than the '99 was, has less miles (around 85k), and is MUCH better shape!! I love my little truck.

I just don't like the second gens. They made them too big and to plastic-y looking. I like small trucks. If I wanted a big one, I would've kept my Dodge Ram 2500 with her hemi (that got around 8 mph city).

1st Gen for me, 2nd Gen is squared off too much IMO

Would I buy a 2nd gen over some of the competitors?

    Of course I would

Ist gen Taco for me.....I love the small size

I also have a 1st gen Tundra...also love the size over the 2nd gen

Seems like 1st gens are more reliable then the 2nd Gens

Almost bought a new 2010 Dcab Taco a few years ago...loved the test drive(auto trans) and was going to order the 6 speed manual.....glad I didn't from the problems the 6 speed guys are having.

Then I found a mint used 2006 Dcab Tundra with only 24k miles and grabbed it......way more truck for the $ then the Taco Dcab and only a wee bit larger.

Sold my 93 Dodge cummins 1 1/2 yrs ago to buy the Taco as the "work"truck and love this little beast...Tundra sits at home most days

Very happy owning 2 1st gens...they have both been problem free!!

I bought my '99 off the show room floor and have loved it for the 12 years that I've owned it. I've always liked the 2nd gens but if I could only have 1 it would have to be a 1st gen.

My truck is now entering a new stage of its life and will be seeing a lot of off road use. I'm always surprised by the number of 2nd gens that I see banging against the trails, but for me, I cannot justify bringing a newer truck through the rocks. 1st gens are also smaller and lighter which makes it easier in narrow trails and tight corners.

For my uses there is no question that a 1st gen is right for me. Most likely sometime in the future I'll be getting a 2nd gen to tow my 1st gen to the trails. :D

Althought due to the towing capacity of Taco's it may end up having to be a Tundra.

Don't know if my opinions matters since I'm new to the Taco world, but 1st gen.

If I wanted a truck that big (2nd gen), I'd get a full size.
