how long is steak good in the freezer for?

I just pulled out a nice looking strip steak. marked: 2.28.08

is a year too long?

 

as long as it doesn't have freezer burn, you it'll be OK...

how does it look? I dont think a year will hurt ya as long as its not freezer burnt. It may not taste as good as right from the butcher thou.

 

They say about a year in the freezer so you should be fine. I need a disclaimer now!

 

Microwave it. That will kill all the bacteria that have hibernated in it.

 

I'd donate it to the Chris Test labs. Maybe a flash flame cooking method would be in order.

 

I run a meat market. A year is too long...unless you used one of those vacuum sealed bags AND kept in a deep freeze type freezer. The freezer in a conventional home refrigerator is a self defrosting type, which means it warms up a bit to keep the ice build up down, whatever is in there also warmus up a bit and then is re frozen,(BURN) now a stand alone chest type freezer maintains a constant temperature and "Should" keep the meat in an edible condition. Also don't forget, from the time the cow is slaughtered it is either wet or dry aged, most retailers only sell wet aged beef which means the Strip Steak you bought last year could have been 45 days post slaughter,with that being said, I'd throw it away and call Pizza hut.

 

well i ate it. how long before i know if i got sick there was no freezer burn on it. cooked it on the stove to a warm center. in hindsight, maybe I should have just thrown it away.

I've had turkeys in the freezer for a year - and ate 'em. I'm still alive and healthy.

 

X2. 2 years ago we bought a fresh turkey for Thanksgiving and asked my daughters boyfriend to put it in the refrigerator downstairs. Day before Thanksgiving I go downstairs to get it and - yup - it was in the freezer! We had to scramble to get a new one, but we ate the old one the next year. It was fine. We never even told anyone what happened.

It'll be fine.

Now how long can a steak be in the refrigerator and be fine is a man's question.

Answer. No more than a week. Otherwise even steak sauce won't kill the flavour of decay.

Note: This has not stopped me from eating week old steaks regardless.
