FWIW I have a Hoya HMC on my 18-55, but that was before I realized how pointless they are. Like Ian said, just use a lens hood

    This.

Putting extra glass in front of your lens elements should be avoided unless necessary (polarizing filter, ND filter, etc...). "UV Haze" filters are usually more detrimental than helpful and most of them hurt image contrast as well.

Why put a $40 piece of glass in front of a $400 (on the CHEAP end) lens?

The real reason for not using 'extra' glass in front of the lens is it could affect color or worse, cause reflections (especially true when shooting toward bright light--like the sun).

But it's true. Why put a cheap filter in front of an expensive piece of glass?

It's so true. I was at a PS presentation and they were showing how the fashion models are touched up. It's quick and pretty amazing.

I was just gonna say you gotta get over this whole "England thing". Leave it. Let it go. Head for the hills of Scotland.

But you already said it :D

    Yup.

I don't know what the situation is there now but economy wise, it's not the greatest of times. Three years is a long time and things could easily improve. If it were me, I'd go Ed/Glas. I think.

Yeah. But there, it's always been tight living. Doesn't seem like the swings have been as wide. I have relatives there and Ireland as well.
