I haven't skipped one with cash bar/no booze but they have not been as much fun as the ones with.

My wedding had free everything, and lots and lots of mixed drinks for free, 6 beers on tap, and we offered everything except for shots, the bar servers wouldn't let us, so you got it on the rocks and drank it like a shot.

Charging your guests makes you look cheap, and I am a cheap-ass person when it comes to giving others free shit. It is just one of those things. Weddings arent cheap.

Another nice thing is to have engraved mugs/wine glasses for the wedding party, those people had access to a private stock of shots and liquors.

What's the point of a reception/after party if there's not an open bar?

I'd go with option 2 free beer/wine and they pay for whatever else and maybe a round of champagne for when the best man best woman do their toast. My Dad, a few friends of his, and myself have catered a few weddings with an open bar and it's hilarious to watch people get shit faced and make a fool of themselves if you aren't the one's getting married and being embarrassed. The worst one was when a girl got shit faced, fell into the pond, and almost drowned after slapping a bridesmaid for dancing with the guy she was trying to hook up with earlier that evening. I come from a long line of alcoholics so an open bar would not be the best idea at a family wedding, I've seen the damage these people can do they had to make a few trips to the store to pick up more beer after laying waste to a couple of kegs.

Nothing wrong with this option, chances are the facility won't allow it. We had to by from them, it was $400-500 per keg, f-ing ridiculous.

The reception is not to drink yourself in a coma, it is to enjoy time with the wedding party. I can have a great time with kool-aid if that's all that is offered. I don't really understand why some people can't have a good time without alcohol involved.
But that's just me - nothing personal to those who drink....back to the topic....
