adding TRAC to 06 TRD offroad?

Does anyone know if the TRAC system can be added to a 2006 TRD offroad that didn't have this option from the factory?

 

Because it involves electronics, the computer, spin sensors, the VSC system... I am going to say you need to wait to you get a 2009+ Tacoma (and get the 4WD Off Road because that is what has a hydraulic brake booster to enhance the built in TRAC and create A-TRAC).

In the meantime, try clicking the emergency brake lever a couple notches to fake it.

 

I would love to have a 2009+ Tacoma, but that isn't in my budget right now. As GP3 says in this thread

2005-2006 4X4 Off Road trucks have an optional package that equips the truck with VSC/TRAC/DAC/HAC. This system includes the infamous Hydraulic Brake Booster that 2009+ 4X4 TRD Off Road trucks have.

So if that was an option from the factory, couldn't it be added to a truck that didn't have that option? I know, it might be so expensive that it wouldn't make sense, but it seems like a lot of the systems needed are already in place - ABS, etc. What if I found a wrecked 2006 TRD Offroad that had the VSC/TRAC/DAC/HAC system, pulled it out, and installed it in my truck?

 

It is cheaper and more effective to put an ARB air locker in the front, but this is only needed if you are a serious offroader.

I'd spend the money on armor and a winch.

 

A factory technician is the one to give the best answer... However, as mentioned above, if you want traction... the a REAR LOCKER is the best addition. My 2001 and 2005 Tacomas were Off Road 4x4s, and the rear locker will take you everywhere you should ever wish to go. If it is on highway stability (VSC system), then that is another matter.

I agree, the front locker probably isn't necessary though unless you're really hardcore.

 

Steve O is right - I have a TRD offroad, so it already has the rear locker. I talked to the service department at my local toyota dealer. The service writer thought all TRD-OR's had it - which was my mistake when I bought the truck. He talked to his shop foreman, who said they basically couldn't help me with adding VSC. I'm thinking it would still be technically possible, but stupidly expensive.

I'm planning to set this truck up as an overland expedition vehicle, so I need good offroad capability. I'm not going to be doing radical wheeling, so not sure that the front locker is necessary, although it would be nice to have. I'm thinking the money would be better spent on armor and a winch.

 

A lot of people on Tacoma World didn't/don't even know that TRAC/VSC/HAC/DAC/ALSD was available for 06-08 trucks.

When equipped with the optional TRAC package, 06-08 trucks have the hydraulic brake booster, associated wheel sensors, and have TRAC in 4low. Stock, without modification.

based on your discription of the type of wheeling that you intend to do you would be better of having a high clearance front bumper that will fit a winch just as you said, that should be sufficient enough..although having a front locker is about one of the better mods i have done to my own taco it's not necessary unless you get into the more extreme terrain.

 

First. Its all parts so its possible to install just not practical.
Second you goign to be regearing anyway so you may as well add extra for a front locker.
Third. People add armor because they can not get up things so they need to bash their way through. I take 4wd with F/R lockers over armored truck anyday.
I would get front locker and good winch first.

I think this would be an interesting thing to do if parts can be acquired from junkyards or wrecked trucks for cheap. I have no idea where to even start, though.

How much of that is already in place on a 2006 TRD-OR with ABS?

 

They have TRAC in 4 low? You sure it isn't 4H? The 09+ only have TRAC in 4H unless we do the yellow wire mod to get it in 4L.

Positive. 2005-2008 (when equipped with the TRAC/VSC package) have (A)TRAC in 4high and 4low. Stock/unmodified. Read the thread I linked.

You are right though: 09+ SR5/Sports only have TRAC in 4H unless you do the yellow wire mod. Even then, TRAC doesn't really compare to a 2005-2012 with the hydraulic brake booster as it seems to be much more aggressive.

Hey - I'm just trying to learn about my truck. I thought this forum was a place to go for information. What's the problem with that?

 

I was thinking TRAC might be nice to have when turning as opposed to making tight turns with both diffs locked. I don't have money for this right now, but it may be a fun project to later. Nothing is stopping me from adding a front locker too someday.
