    Hello Forum,
My '08 Tacoma Double Cab 4.0 has the stock radio with single CD player. My only mod to it is the Grom I-Pod integrater. I am pleased with the power of the HU but I want to upgrade the speakers (no amp or sub desired). I am looking for the best quality sound with out going to component speakers AND without a sub. I listen to Classic Rock, Classic Rap, 80's freestyle, and some current pop songs & I play my I-Pod 95% of the time. I am looking to purchase the ********* 6x9 & 6.5 mounting kits, the plastic ones, but I don't know what speakers to buy. In the 90's & early this Century I would always upgrade to Pioneer speakers. I don't know whats good now. I also don't know anything about how many ohms the speakers need to have in order to not damage the head unit. What is a good quality, proper ohms for the radio, set of speakers for the double cab. Thanks in advance for the info!

What r a good set of speakers to run off a avh-4300? I am just looking to upgrade the front door speakers, I also would run everything pioneer n haven't really cared in awhile to know what 6x9 or 6.5s r of good quality but also not stressful on the wallet. Mainly best bang for Buck? I know I would need the rings from ********* but which speakers r a good choice with powering them through the HU

->under construction<- Alpine CDE-125BT Headunit (temp), 6.5 Alpine Type-S speakers, Dynamat xtreme 2 layers 4 doors, Access Limited Tonneau cover, Pop-n-lock for tailgate, 15% tint all around, "hammered metal" emblems, Plasti-dip front valance, Anytime Fog lights, Removed front mud flaps, removed rear badges
I changed out my factory speakers for 6.5 Alpine Type S on all doors, they sound great. I did also change the head unit, I don't think its worth changing the speakers without the head unit. In fact I say change head unit before the speakers. HU is where most of the difference comes in.

For the speakers, I made my own mounting kits from .5 inch MDF, worked out great, easy and wayyy cheaper.

I also put dynamite xtreme on all my doors for sound insulation, makes it sound even better, I have more of that to do..

Got pics of the whole process if you want..

Not thread jacking per say, along same lines of ops question. If I make a new thread ill get the same ill minded response of "search" or "read reviews" so y not add onto the question of what speakers would be a good upgrade without going with components

What enjm10 is asking is EXACTLY what I am asking. BTW, Why did you (XD40SC) choose 6'5" vs 6"x9"? I am just curious. I am not implying that it was wrong or right. Forgive my lack of knowledge with this. I notice that the OEM HU has quite a bit of bass for factory but the speakers sound as if they can't take it. Almost every car that I have owned since I was 16 (22 yeaers ago) have sounded better with aftermarket speakers (particularly Pioneers. For the last 7 years I had subs & amps in various vehicles. I am NOT interested in that with this truck. There has to be a speaker set up that sounds better than what I have nowm while using the OEM HU, I don't know if I have to buy 2 or 4 ohm speakers but maybe someone here has replaced all 4 speakers on there double cab, knows what brand speaker they used, & and can say if they noticed an improvement.

I may go with RockFord Fosgate XD40SC but I need to know how many ohms they are & if I need to even worry about ohms. I am sorry if I sound like a broken record but there has to be a simple speaker upgrade available. I can't believe that every 6x9 & 6.5 speaker is replaced ONLY to be powered by an amp or aftermarket HU.

    Thanks again.

Ok sry tacomaworld security guards, I'm not trying to stir anything up but u whip always have.something smartass response on a lot of threads, but some more than bad r usually helpful if people r gonna chime in for op while I'm looking for the same answer I don't consider it being a bad idea yeah I can search n review but op n I r looking for suggestions from other TW fans who have been down that road.

Id like to be helped out more than getting critiqued on how to use a thread.

When it comes to speakers, the answer is very subjective. What I like, you may not, so you to go to some stereo shops and listen. I used Pioneer 3 ways all around and will swap the head unit shortly.

This is your best bet but fwiw I have Kicker DS60's in my doors and they are great. They can handle bass without distorting but won't shake anything just give you a decent low end sound. I have subs in my truck so they run 120Hz up and just won't quit.

the reason you should listen to whippersnapper02 is because, generally speaking, he is right.

good (uprated) speakers need clean power to sound good. and by clean power i mean low distortion as measured by a high S/N ratio. if you put shitty (dirty) sound into an uprated speaker, guess what, the sound is still going to sound...shitty. before i knew anything about car stereo sound (and i'm still learning all the time), i put a pair of high end infinity kappas in my cherokee with the factory head unit, expecting them to sound mint. they sounded like crap. i was in disbelief. when i finally found out what was happening i added a nice 4 channel amp and - voila - my speakers came alive. and i don't mean "loud." i mean they they created better sound that i could actually hear, at all volumes.

alot depends on your stock head unit, as some units these days actually come with "decent" specs, but nothing will sound as good as going with a quality aftermarket HU or amp. i'm not sure why you don't want to consider adding clean power in the form of an amp to your factory system, but it will make a WORLD of difference to those nice upgraded speakers you are going to buy. do even a little bit of research and you will see what i'm telling you is the truth. i learned it for myself the hard way.

as far as 6.5" speakers instead of 6x9's - ask any audiophile, and they will tell you the sound from a round speaker like a 6.5" is infinitely better than that which emanates from a 6x9 speaker. and if you listen to them side by side, you will immediately hear the difference. basically 6x9's are the bottom of the barrel. in addition, when you look at speakers, there is a reason component speakers cost more than non-component speakers. separating the sound into lows, mids and highs through a crossover and giving them each a speaker that is designed to handle that particular frequency will always yield much more accurate and better sound. you will actually hear things you never heard before.

anyway, i could go on and on, but if you want to spend your money on just speakers, go right ahead it's your money. my favorite car speakers are polk audio mobile monitors, or boston acoustics. diamond audio is pretty decent too. i know some folks who like kicker, some who like jl audio (i personally love this company's amps) and alpine, among others. pioneer i kind of lump into the same low end camp as sony, kenwood, etc. speakers for the masses.

    good luck with your decision.

Save your money until you can put a decent head unit in. That factory unit its a steaming pos and needs to be the first thing out not the speakers. I just got done doing the whole deal with Alpine S Series all around. I have an access cab so I put 6x9 in front and 6.5 in the rear. Sound phenomenal now but like I said I replaced that head unit with a quality one at the same time...

Thread jacker you can pm me as I have the same head unit you do

I went with 6.5 because they do sound better than 6x9. I installed/sold car audio for 6 years through out college and high school and do not like the sound I am looking for from 6x9. I was going for cleaner mid's and better highs and you can't really get those from 6x9. I went with the speakers I used because....they were brand new and free. Buddy gave them to me after Crutchfield messed up an order.

As far as the OEM headunit...that is staying. I am going to wire into the harness for preouts and run 2 amps. One for a 10 inch Audiobahn sub with a 500 watt class D memphis amp and another for the components in the doors. I like the look of factory, like how clean it is(aesthetically), like the steering wheel controls and also like how no one would think you have upgrades by peeking in the window.

But like everyone else said...to each his own when it comes to audio.

You will get improved sound quality even of you just upgrade the speakers it will just be at much lower volume because better speakers aren't going to be as efficient as the factory ones, so the factory deck won't play them as loud without distortion. Everyone is right it is much better to add an amp and speakers but you can do it later if you decide you don't like the sound of just speakers, there are so many good sounding speakers out there and many brands sound a little different from others it's all personal preference the vest thing to do is go out and listen in some stores even if your going to buy online go to all of your local stores and listen to what they have. Personally I have focal.
