Questions for Tacoma Double Cab Owners

I'm leaning towards buying a 2012 Tacoma DC in 4wd. I would prefer the TRD Off Road package due to the addition of the A-Trac and rear diff lock. It looks like this is only available with the short bed? How do you like the short bed? I'm also considering the Tundra but don't think I need that much truck. How is the room in the backseat of the DC's?


I currently own a 99 extended cab 4wd Tacoma and have had excellent service from it. I bought the truck new and other than routine maintenance, I had to replace the contacts in the starter and replace the dome light.
How do the 2nd generation Tacoma's stack up to the 1st gens? Sorry for all the questions but any experiences or opinions will be greatly appreciated.

 

Two cocker spaniels and a baby seat is tight with a double cab.

I have an 07 DCSB off road and I love it. There is plenty of space in the back seats and the short bed isn't to bad. I can fit two full sized bikes in the back (main reason why I got it). The locker is definitely the way to go .

 

I have a 6 and 8 and 13 year old boys and they fit good in the back seat.... Now I have never had a adult back there but I think its would still be pretty good. Now for the short bed. I like it and have filled it up and it works real good. I used to have a Titan ext cab and that had the longer bed and I feel like you end up using what you got for a bed size. Hope that helps

 

I've got the 07 Offroad Double Cab Short Bed. The back seat area is large with plenty of storage underneth and behind the seats. The bed is plenty big enough for my needs. The over length of the truck is long enough as it is...

 

Adults fit just fine. Now, having your seat back gangster style won't work but sure, a couple adults fit just fine around town. I never even considered a 1st Gen because I felt it was too small.

 

If you don't haul a lot the short bed is cool.
I use it all the time to go to the dump with shit. Prob every 6 months or so. I transport a full size quad with the tail gate and or a dirt bike at time with no problems. Hell I have pulled a 4000 pound boat behind it with no provlems

 

Wouldn't ever get anything other than a DC in a Tacoma. Miss the 8' bed I had with my full size Cheby tho, but I guess with the gate down you could still haul longer things, dunno about full 4x8 sheets tho, never measured between the wells!!! Hmmm now I'm gonna have to find out unless someone else already knows.

 

got a ’07 TRD OR 4wd. love it. have had 2 adults in back and they even made a comment about how much room their is for a mid size truck. have also had 4 teens back their. lol SB is fin i if you know how to pack stuff good you can pack allot back their! i got the SB because i did not need more bed space. we have a 2000 tundra extended cab and a 12x7 trailer. i think i have a pic of all the stuff in my bed from my trip to NY back in august. let me see if i can find it.

 

just for perspective i have the DC long bed. i got rid of my jeep rubicon (with front and rear lockers) for this tacoma.

the back seat is roomy enough for kids, and car seats, but just barely. i wouldn't call it "roomy," my kids legs in a car seat hit the back of my seat. i find it more useful for storage than anything else.

there's debates a plenty about this, but i purposely bought this truck for the 6 foot bed, i found the 5 foot bed much less useful. again, the guys who have the short bed will tell you all kinds of reasons that it isn't so bad - and perhaps it isn't for their needs - but i found a longer bed much more suited for "my" uses of a pickup truck. again, there are probably a hundred or more threads on this topic alone and there is no right or wrong answer really.

fwiw, i had a 98 4runner, which had a locking rear diff, and i never used it once in 4 years of ownership living in the northeast. never needed it, and never did any hard core offroading. unless you plan to offroad this truck, it's kind of a waste and a limited slip will serve you better. if you plan to take the truck offroad, there is no comparison, a locker (and preferably two of them) will make ALL the difference. a locker will take you places you could never otherwise go. depends on what you are going to use the truck for, really.

i've heard others complain it's only 3'6" between the wells. never actually measured myself.

 

Guess that's a sacrifice for a mid-sized truck these days!! I'll have to measure mine.

I car pool an hour and a half with 2 of my 5'11'' co-workers and they never complain about the room in the back of my DCSB. I wouldnt call it "roomy" but they're is enough room to seat 2 adults.

I don't haul that much stuff in my bed, but I know it won't fit a 4x6 piece of plywood flat even w/ the tailgate down. I still woulndn't trade my truck for anything though.

According to my 07 sales brochure the bed width is 56.7 total inches and between wheel wells is 41.5 inches (same for both the short bed and long bed.) S/B length is 60.3" / 73.5" for L/B.

 

Fuck i fumble fingered it! Kinda sad I messed that up as I just purchased one 3 days ago...

 

Thanks for all the quick replies! I have 5x10 utility trailer that can be used to haul larger things if needed. I also have a tool box in my bed now, so it is essentially a 5' bed itself.

only if you regularly haul plywood would the bed lenght be a issue.

otherwise the double cab is the best choice
