looking to retrofit ebay halo projectors

how are the HID 500's?

 

still need to align them and make the brace. was gonna TRY and do it today. you work today? could really use some help on that brace. i have all the material and stuff. just waiting for the silicone to dry then ill install the headlights.

One question for you. Were the halogen projectors H1's that you removed? If so, what projectors from TRS did you pick up to replace them? I guess that's two questions, LOL.

 

I do have pics.. just waiting till they are completely done. Waiting for the silicone to dry,then installing them. I'm super nervous.. worried they wont be even and hold up. Even tho I did secure the shit out of them. Lol I just replaced the stock ones. so one set of projectors.

OK.... so i finally have them completely done, aimed, working, uploaded pics.. now to the break down. i havent done one of these before so bear with me.

i took them off the truck and baked them just like anything else.


after baking and peeling apart.


I then compared the stock projectors to the Morimotos in size and shape


I then took out the the stock projector with the three screws in the back. it sandwiches the black composite plastic between the lens and bowl.


once removed you can really see how close the two projectors are in size. the new Morimoto is on top and has wires coming from it




i then spent hours and hours trying to figure out how to mount the new projector to the housing. the projectors have different mounting points. the old had three holes.. the new one has four. all in different places. also, the new one was a bit too wide to sit into the hole for the entire projector. This required me to dremel ALOT of the black composite plastic for it to clear and sit into the housing.

once i had it dremeled to fit.. i then had to figure out how to mount it. i tried pieces of flat stock and misc. pieces of metal, etc from Lowes. none of which worked. i needed to find a way to make sure it was going to be level, even, spaced correctly, etc.. and making something from scratch jeopodized all of those.

i then decided to take the plunge and use the stock cutoff/shield plate and cut it and use it. this is the left over from the stick piece after cutting the bottom out that i needed. it had enough room to drill two holes to mount the new bowl and lens to, and then mount that to the black housing using the stock projector holes.


after that, i had to mount the top and make it sturdy.. i just use the stock i had and drilled screws into the black housing. Then slathered two part epoxy over everything to make sure it was solid and prevent cracks.




it definitely isnt pretty, but it is solid. i used the bottom of the solenoid of the new projector and the bottom of the mounting plate i cut up and mounted to to make sure they were straight and even. same pic to show...


I also used some nuts between the mounting plate, and the black plastic to raise it up a little more and clear some of the bowl that touched the black plastic... then another nut behind that to secure it all.


thats about it.. i then test fitted the halo covers and lens..




then baked, sealed, added silicone, and installed. to my surprise the cutoffs were even and straight. just needed aiming.

behind Lowes.. level ground from what i could tell. about 20-30 feet away



I think they are aimed pretty good now.. just thinking maybe they need to be lowered about it and not sure why the fogs are a different color than the headlights... they are both 4.3k. ???



anyways.. im very pleased with how they came out. With no how to's about this and no certainty if it would work.. i was really nervous and stressed. just eye-balling the levelness and spacing worked out great. If your feeling brave, and confident.. go for it. It was definitely worth it, but time will tell if they hold up. talk about a stressful three days! hope this helps anybody thinking of doing this like I was. As far as i know, im the only one to do this.. which makes me feel good but at the same time, I dont want to steer people in the wrong direction.

Bump... any advice on aiming or how they are adjusted?

Im pretty sure i need to drop them a bit.. I had onecar flash me this morning heaed at me In the opposite lane.. but I was heading uo hill which I know gives the effect of high beams.. regardless thoi feel like theres not enough light on the ground.. so lowering them might help. Maybe even lower the fogs too? In the last pictures above.. do they look high? Also, notice the color difference.. both 4.3k too. Could it be that the ballasts are different makes?

 

Nice work!! Perfect line on the wall... They do look a little high...
Good idea using the old mount plate/reflector as an adapter ring... no turning back after you cut that apart but it appears to have worked out really well.
Only thing I can think of for the color difference is a different manufacturer for each set of bulbs.

Do you have any before mod, wall lighting shots to compare the improvement? Like your Lowes parking lot pics.
Just wondering how bad the stock projectors were... I've thought about getting some of this style light but was concerned about that issue.

 

Thanks man..yeah the stock mounting plate was te sketchy part. But it turned out pretty good for just eye balling it. lol

The bulbs are all brand new 4.3k from TRS.. the only thing thats different are the ballasts.

I'll see if I can dig up before pics.. lets just say they were no where near the quality of these. Width sucked, cutoffs were horendous, flicker was ridiculous, and output... Ugh.. lol.

 

Not the best pic.. but was right after i installed the HIDs.. they were aligned using the stock halogens In them. So this pic was "aligned"

OH MY!! Those stock projectors were pretty gross huh... a vast improvement!
