2002 Prerunner double cab. I usually put about 200lbs. over the tires, I run bfg atko and also a Detroit Truetrac. Not too many problems getting where I need to go.

No issues at all in the snow, even with stock Dunflops. Knowing how to drive in snow goes a long way.

I don't know anything about snow, but my truck with the composite bed and no weight in the back is really easy to break the tires loose in the rain. The situation improved when I put the camper shell on. My work truck is a 2wd regular cab with 800-1000 pounds in the back. It has no such problems in the rain, even with cheap tires.

Throw some sandbags in the back, I bet it will be fine.

The county building inspector has two concrete parking curbs like what you see in a parking lot bolted down in the back of his 2wd Ranger. Apparently that makes the difference in getting into and out of a muddy jobsite.

Yeah. In added weight. Tools, parts, heavy ass camper shell, ladders, etc. Plus what the truck weighs.

240# is the weight I add.

    -Easy on Gas when starting.
    -Easy on brakes when slowing.
-Plan ahead, make the ride smooth.
    -Go slower than normal.
-If your area rarely gets snow be very careful, the other drivers might not be taking the same precautions you are.

I think you will have better steering and stopping response with the air at correct PSI; you might have better traction starting with low psi but stopping and steering are important too.

Yeah, not suggesting anyone put that much weight it just for snow driving. I use the bumpstops every day on my work rig. :D But more weight does seem to help traction to a point.

I have to say, so far I've been very impressed at the snow capabilities of my 5 Lugger. The traction control really helps and the 300 lbs of sandbags in the back. Not as good as 4x4 but id rather have the gas mileage.

Make sure you have a dedicated snow tire and not all seasons, there is a big difference. Slushier snow is harder to drive in than dry snow and wider tires will amplify that problem.

I have 3 60lb bags of sand in the back of my truck. It makes a big difference compared to an empty bed. I can also cut the bags open and dump the sand onto the snow/ice to make some instant traction if needed.

good news to all you haters ;)

I left the house this morning, with a total of 240lbs of sand in the back... this truck is a BEAST now. :D We had 5" of new fluff this morning, and about 2" down in downtown seattle at sea level

I couldnt even GET the dunlop griptastics to slip (yes they are called griptastic lol). I took a pic for you guys.

Anyway, thats all i can suggest. 250lbs or so of sand and you're set. Its getting nasty here in the seattle area and I was plowing through it! OUT OF MY WAY

Couldnt agree more. I had 2 bags and it was crap. I'd slide anytime i gave it any gas at all. I used to drive every weekend to crystal mountain, I used to work there... so i know how to drive in the snow. THis truck just sucks without weight in the back, and it rocks with weight!

if you can get by with 5lug, it is 300lbs less, which is huge with the 4cyl, big tires and no 4.10s (hense good mpgs with 31s)

Should you ever find yourself needing more weight in winter, shovel snow into the truck bed.
