With the Sig 516, I was planning a lot of range time and occasional run and gun. Plus that added benefit of having an apocalypse rifle. I know I won't be using it to its fullest capabilities but who really does with any firearm or product.

I doubt the extra money would be worth it then. Unless you just like the looks of it then I would say spend your money on more ammo or carbine courses.

Look at the guys who actualy teach these carbine classes. What are they using? standard AR's. Usually the people that want piston guns are ones that just want to be able to say "they have a piston gun".

no offense to you personally. Just something I have noticed.

Haha. I'm the kinda a guy that would say "I have a piston AR." Perfect.

Thousands of bad guy guys have been eliminated by DI M16/M4/AR
Sounds like a fix looking for a problem.

Ruger 556, op rod great package for the $.
LWRC 6.8 + MO 9 Point, op rod, expensive, accurate.
Labs = better chick magnets cheaper too.

Had my 17 yr old niece banging a paper plate size gong, over and over off the bench at 300 yards, her 1st real rifle shooting experience.

Many good brands out there, LMT, Rock River...DI is just fine, I am a lazy civilian now, like wiping off my carbon with a rag, thus op rod.

Well in that case, save your money and buy a L-W-R-C.. then you can say "I have a LWRC" ...and anyone thats knows anything about AR's will get a chubby

My CEO and I were talking ARs once and he said "you know, back in the 60's direct impingement was the answer to everyone's prayers when it replaced the fragile M14 op rod system. Now the piston op rod is the answer to the DI system's weakness? Interesting."

    It stuck with me.

AR-15s are excellent platforms for any hunting in the correct caliber.

I love my 6.8, I hunt deer, pig, and would take it pronghorning for sure. Currently shooting a 110g SSA hunter round, Hornady now makes a 120g hunting round.

Yes in TX many use them in 556 for deer, I would hunt elk or caribou with my 6.8 at 120g, and moose with the ar-10 in 308. While stationed in AK I saw natives hunting boues and moose with smaller calibers then 308 often.

We love what we know. I was trained on the AR.

That 6.8 SPC is an interesting round as is the 6.5 Grendel and 6mmAR.
One of those will be my next AR I do believe.

    Shot placement trumps all.

As to range, sorry, I got to rambling and missed that.

The 6.8 can take game at any range I feel I can ethically shoot. Antelope can start at 250yards. Me, I would stay under 400 yards, with a slight pucker factor.

As for pigs, 6.8 drops them dead, I also use a marlin lever action 45-70 325g cause I love the round and rifle, the locals laugh at me, they use. 223s.

308 is a great choice, you can afford to shoot those.

OP consider an ar-10, 308 does it all.

Correct, 556 will get more range time, and can hunt whitetail in most States, great for varmint and the things the OP said he was looking to do.

Get a Ruger or as several said build your own. 5.56 for sure, if you're looking for a 308, get into long distance (sniper) shooting with the correct weapon for the task. That's my $.02.

    Ok, so why Ruger?
Ruger is the one of the very few firearms companies out there that is not owned by an investment bank or some other parent company or 3rd party who's adopted the brand and now markets it as if it was the original company (like what's happened to Colt). Their AR is great quality, priced right from new (leaving money for optics and add ons, and gas piston. Direct impingement is not the bomb if you shoot a lot.

for your first one build something basic, using quality parts. Then, once you have gotten a good amount of trigger time behind it you will find things you like and don't like about it. Then for your next build (which will inevitably happen) you can get the "top o' the line" rifle with parts you know you will like based on experience, not what a bunch of people on a internet forum told you.
