Switching 7 pin to a 4 pin

Hey all. I have an 08 V6 Dc 4x4 Taco and it came with the 7 pin connection.

I was planning on just using one of the adapters that plugged in to it but this weekend I backed over a tool box while visiting the family that my brother left behind my truck on the ground and it basically broke off my 7pin.

I only use a 4 pin anyways to pull my boat and am wondering if I should just replace the 7 and get an adapter or take it off and wire in a 4 pin.

Could I wire a 4 pin on to the existing wires? Anybody done this?

 

I have a spare one oem 7 pin wuth the lp light .wires to.

 

Fix the 7 pin as before. use an adapter. You never know when you might need it. Can you wire up a 4 pin?? sure.. fix it right..

 

I'd keep the 7 pin. You can always dumb down a 7 pin to a 4 pin, you can't turn a 4 pin into a 7 pin if you ever need it in the future.

I've not done it, but I don't see why you can't direct wire a 4-pin connector as long as the wires from the 7-pin provide the proper output. There may be more to it though. I have wired a 4-pin onto a Tacoma that was not pre-equipped with a wiring harness and the 4-pin harness contained an isolation unit of some type. A few minutes with a test light might provide the answer.

 

Don't mess with the truck's trailer harness.
Just get a 7-pin to 4-flat converter plug.

 

Well it looks like I'm going to just put another 7 pin on. Maybe I can find one of the ones that has a 7 and 4 at a parts store tomorrow. I gotta get it set up to tow the boat Friday when we hit the water!

 

Save your 7-pin. You may want to pull something that has trailer brakes someday.
Then just get the adapter as I outlined above.

Pollack #12-705 is a good aftermarket substitute for the plug on the vehicle. You might have to fabricate a bracket.

I have seen this "combo" plug arrangement but it was an issued Toyota setup on a Tundra, I believe.
