Subwoofer vibration...

My 2011 has JBL with the subwoofer behind the rear seat. When I have the sound turned up the subwoofer vibrates and sounds terrible. If I push against the plastic enclosure that the subwoofer is mounted in it stops vibrating and sounds better. Anybody else have this problem and if so how did you fix it, {without buying another system}.

 

It's normal unfortunately.

 

Take it to the dealership. It's still under warranty.

Same here. Mine rattles like crazy... ugh annoying.

 

Thats what I was thinking, pull out the enclosure and stuff something like a towel in there. Just wanted to see if there's any other ideas/options out there.

No put the towel in between the seat and the Enclosure, (fold the towel till the rattling stops )works for me

 

That would work but I usually keep my rear seats folded down to haul stuff. I'll give it a try next time my seats are up.

Anyone who puts a real subwoofer anywhere knows that if you put something in front of it like plastic, it's going to vibrate. My suggestion is to cut a hole in the plastic in front of the speaker so the sound waves can get out directly. Could you post a picture of what it looks like? There might be enough room to put an aftermarket speaker cover there instead... like the steel criss-cross cover you put on performance sub enclosures.

 

I feel your pain, worst stock stereo system I've had in my 33 years of buying autos.

 

Even worse is that it's an upgrade too.

 

My seems to rattle the back panel its mounted to, which rattles against the back wall. The dealer gave me a piece double back tape to put between the panel and the back wall . It seemed to start when I had the original sub replaced. Sounded like it was blown. I saw the tech "ripping my panel off", when he was changing the sub out, and it was obvious he had never taken this panel off before. I had just taken the panel off a few weeks earlier to remove the rear head rests, and it was easy if you follow the shop manual. I think he may have damaged a clip or two. I am going to take the panel off again and put some sound material on the back wall, and check for any damaged clips. The dealer stated they would check the clips and replace any as needed for me, but would not help with the install of the sound material. Anyone try this?

Thats why I don't like taking my truck to the dealer unless absolutely necessary. I'm thinking about glueing some color matched carpeting to the plastic enclosure and see if that helps. Let us know if the sound deadening material works.

 

It's not a plastic cover, the actual sub enclosure box is made out of plastic... I don't know who thought that was a good idea.

 

I had an additional suggestion, and I know this may sound obvious, but my system is WAAAAAAAYYYYYYY too bass heavy. I have the bass setting in the negative 2 range, and still can't get tonal bass, just the dreaded thump, lower to negative 3 and there isn't enough bass. I can't seem to get an acceptable eq from the stock system, so I just no longer listen to music, only some sports talk.

 

My 2013 with JBL system does the same, ^this is actually a great idea!

I also experienced that problem. I removed the plastic subwoofer cover, and installed a rubber weatherstrip I bought from Home Depot for $3 bucks. Subwoofer sounds great now.
