Any of you German shepherd owners know anything about schutzhund training? Really would like Phoenix to be at her full potential.

I am not a GSP owner but a Boxer owner and Shutzhund training is for all breeds. I saw this demonstrated most effectively in my assignments in Germany. Shutzhund is the art of Tracking, Obediance, Protection. Not to dash your hopes but my Boxer was to gentle to go on with shutzhund although I did see some Boxers who were Shutzhund I, II, and III. Google it and you will find a trainer who or club who conducts this sport and you can ask them about it. Personally I love obediance training. I love to watch man and animal work together to solve a problem. But tracking is a necessity also. Protection is very close to Obediance. Good luck and post what you find out here. The training can be very expensive only to have you dog fail at the trials. The dog may just simply not be cut out for it...

my friend just got a nice German shepherd puppy last week. it’s now 10 weeks old and like 25 to 30 pounds. friends said when he picked him up all the other pups wear like 10 pound smaller. i’ll get a pic tomorrow going with him to take it to get 2nd round of shots.

If you want to do Shutzhund training, my advice to you is think long and hard about it. If you're not willing to work with your dog every day, please reconsider. It's a lifelong commitment and it brings a certain amount of personal liability with it too. Lifelong because once your dog starts bite work, you are committed to maintaining that training (so your dog doesn't end up biting someone because they put a hand on top of the head and withdrew it quickly for example or someone shows up to your house in an overly large Carhartt jacket). If you cannot keep your dog, it could mean putting the dog down instead of adopting it out--so please think about your decision.

I'm not saying don't do it. It's a very rewarding experience. Especially the tracking and obedience parts. But it's a big time commitment too.

Very true thank you. It might be a difficult task to take on at the moment but I think I read somewhere the dog has to be atleast 2 years old to begin training. Which gives me a little time. I'll have to do some research. I didn't realize you could have different breeds participate. Phoenix is purebred but her grandmother was a white GSD and wasn't sure how the "clubs" considered that.

Phoenix acts the exact same way. If she doesn't know you she will bark until you are gone. Which I like. She will not attack or bite thank god but she will let you know if something is out of place. She will be 8 months old on the 26th of this month. The first time my girlfriend met her she had to give her treats for a straight half an hour before she stopped barking and would warm up to her. To me it's instinct and I feel she would do great on schutzhund if even if she doesn't pass I feel that it will be better for both of us knowing I have more control over those actions.

She could have dominant tendencies and is trying to fill the "leader role" that you aren't. Dogs are super sensitive in that respect. :notsure:

How about just obedience and have her continue to get her canine good citizen award. Obedience classes are wonderful if you get the right teacher.

She does very well with obedience. We have her enrolled in an advanced class and next is canine good citizen. Believe they have to be 1 year old in California? She listens and responds very well to commands. Se is just very protective of the people she knows. Barking wise.

If you have a dog that is showing dominant signs around a year of age, you might want to get on that by having a discussion with a trainer who is familiar with that so that you don't inadvertently encourage the behavior.

Of course, I might be reading more into your comments than is really there too :)

I think a little lol. She is very obedient she listens to me or my sister and obeys. Just stating that if there is anyone that she doesn't know she will bark at them unless properly acquainted with them. With some research it appears to be a very common trait of GSDs

Let her bark two or three times, then tell her "enough", let her know it's under control. Then tell her to "go to bed", "out" or another place that you have designated her to go.
